Rules we all think are true, but not written anywhere?

I just thought of another one:
When I was a junior Sailor (E-3 or below) I was told that if you wanted to grow a mustache, you had to submit a special request chit. Reasoning was it changed your appearance and "you would have to get a new ID card."
I proved that wrong after I made Petty Officer. I took leave when I was stationed in Guam and came back with a mustache. No one in my Chain of Command said anything about it. I also grew it out on deployments. Again no one said anything.

How about "junior guy takes out the trash"
Sure, out of respect for rank, etc it's common practice, but... lol

haha, I was the FNG for 5 months, but I was proud to take out the trash everyday because I was accomplishing my orders. I also had my Private 2 rank stiched on my uniform.

Unless they're prior enlisted they wouldn't wear a GCM. You know, since the medal is only awarded to enlisted personnel.

Yeah our MPF dropped mine off my records twice, and twice I trotted over and summarily had them add it back on... Also had a prior enlisted GO who refused to wear his...he bought me a lot of bourbon to keep me quiet about his bio photo...

Stupid trivia: The medal framed on Col. Potter's wall on the TV show M*A*S*H was a GCM....watched way too many episodes before, during and after my service....

Hair length. There are rules on basic non-fadish appearances of hair-style, and not having hair extended over the ears, but beyond that I have not discovered any true written rules on hair length (e.g. 3" max for men). Anyone know otherwise and have material reference?

Used to be in AFR 35-10 when I was in the USAF. Still have my basic training Airman's training manual, somewhere.

AR 670-1. 3–2. Hair and fingernail standards and grooming policies. (2) Male haircuts. The hair on top of the head must be neatly groomed. The length and bulk of the hair may not be excessive and must present a neat and conservative appearance.
I could have swore there was a specified length for both tops and sides, but I guess not.
