Rules we all think are true, but not written anywhere?

What about the old saying that "regulations are for the GUIDANCE of Commanders. They are not set in stone."? I have found that, when a Commander wants to do something that may be discouraged in the regs, this is the go-to saying. However, regs are freely cited when they back up what the Commander WANTS to do.

Oh yeah.. I can vouch for that one...
I loved how 1st Sergeants and Superintendents would burn you a new butt hole for breaking a regulation.. but when hey do it.. it was a "guideline"...

That's what I tell people when they ask why my wife is bitching because I bought something without discussing it with here before hand.

If you forget or lose your cover, you can place your hand on top of your head as a substitute.

I had an E5 do this once while walking past a couple of 1SGs from the BN...the aftermath was not pretty...

My favorite:
Your hair cannot exceed 3" on top and 1/8" on the sides.
Your hair can be as long as it's neatly groomed, has a tapered appearance, and doesn't affect the wear of your headgear. Also, your haircut is to be judged while wearing headgear, not without. Your hair cannot fall past your eyebrows or ears **when combed**.
Read your regs boys.

When I was in AFJROTC, back in high school, there was a hair length requirement like that, so it may have stemmed from an old Air Force regulation.

Probably not. Just another silly urban legend. I've heard that it couldn't be longer than your ID card. The old large ones.

There USED to be a specific length cited in AR 670-1 when I was first in. It's been through some revisions since 1989, I'm sure...

This reminds me of going through SRP pre-mob. I had been bitten by a lonestar tick and was allergic to beef. Doctor said I had to have follow up and civilian Doctor approval/okay because it wasn’t like I could just grab a specific non-beef MRE, you have to take what you get. Response: Sir, I don’t think you’ve spent much time in the field but we try to know if anyone has an allergy to something specific and will accommodate. Luckily that allergy flowed through in 2 years and I can eat red meat again.

I originally responded to this question by mistake, but I've read a lot of responses that are quite familiar!
I enjoy the military history and old sayings that get passed down and then repeated as knowledge! I've known many good soldiers in my unit to get sunburns, but none of them received UCMJ punishment for it!

Camp Casey Korea summer 2003 a soldier in my platoon did get UCMJ for getting a sunburn. It obviously wasn't about the sunburn. He wasn't supposed to be at the pool but went anyway. Got to stand outside the pool for the next three day weekend and advice all the soldiers going in to wear sunscreen

I once saw a PO1 (Navy E6) issue counseling on an E3 for it. Was the most hilarious review by the chief I think I'd ever seen.. they took that supervisor out of that role real quick.

AIT Fort Jackson, E-12-4, July 1986, PFC was on a MANDATORY battalion fun-day, PT Uniform. PFC JCM was very fair-skinned (blond and pale), got serious sunburns, got an article 15 for damaging government property. He was LOD for 3 days.

My great uncle "swore" he got NJP for being sunburned during WWII after a weekend pass with my great aunt....now if I was with a lady as pretty as my great aunt was then, the beach (or outside) would not where I would have been, but that's me....lol

The center of the Coronado Bay Bridge is lined with dynamite so that in an emergency, Aircraft Carriers can get underway that way.
Debunked because there is only one way in/out of the San Diego bay. Silver Strand would need to have a canal dug through it, as well as being trenched out so that it would be deep enough for all ships, let alone a Carrier, to get to the Pacific that way.

Sure that would cover the ships at Naval Station San Diego, but the Carriers are too big to fit underneath the bridge (which is why they're moored at NAS North Island).

I spent four years on carriers based out of North Island. There is a simple thing to understand why this is some weapon's grade bull - dookie.
North Island pier is north of the bridge. They never go under that bridge at all.

"Males cannot shave their heads totally bald (think Mr. Clean) unless they are a certain percentage bald already."
Debunked years ago (2003 I think) in a Navy uniform gram (quarterly message sent out by the Master Chief in charge of the Navy Uniform board), but still mistakenly enforced (at least back in 2010 it was).

That wasn't "debunked." It was actual regulation (US Army at least) until the early 2000's. It isn't anymore, as my head is shaved all the time :D

The 1992 AR670-1 doesn't mention baldness at all.
The 2005 one states that hair shaved to the scalp is allowed.

I heard a warrant officer tell me once that any badge or device sewn onto the ACU must be of the same material as the uniform (i.e. FRACU, A2CU, etc.).

CW2 Joseph Ramsdell - Okay I see. The way it was put to me was that even if it was an OCP patch it could not go onto FR OCP uniform and visa versa

CW2 Joseph Ramsdell - Thats pretty much what I did, I did a "thank you sir have a great day" and went on my way. But it didn't stop my curiosity.
As it stands no sew on material is made from FR material. The only thing I can think of is that he may have misunderstood something that may have referred to mixing UCP and OCP. At the end of the day yes I am the leader of Soldiers and will enforce official policy. pet peeves are not policy.
