I'm just wondering how this will continue to pan out and your thoughts on this. Keep in mind to keep this discussion professional.
Putin stated not to long ago, as reported from CNN: "I want to remind you that Russia is one of the most powerful nuclear nations," the President said. "This is a reality, not just words."

No one will intentionally use nuclear weapons. Putin and China's Polite Bureau enjoy their comforts more than we do.

I think we need to take Russia very seriously as a political super power. Why? They have gone from an economically frail country to a very rich country based on their newly discovered oil drilling capabilities. They have huge oil fields that are literally refueling their income. And we know what money can do!

Rgr Col (Join to see). I think some people in the world are shocked by fast moving nature of events that have occurred; probably some degree of denial that the problem will self-correct. This is starting to remind me of Command and Conquer 3. Thought I would never see the day where I felt what my parents felt in regards to Russia.

CPT (Join to see) - As a former Russian specialist in Army MI, I can tell you that the Russians never really disappeared. Even at their worst they had the nuclear weapons that could fry us to a crisp, and Putin has spent the last decade+ expanding his arsenal. He's frustrated because no one except a few Stalinist Russians want the return of the Soviet Union and Russian confrontation with the West. But he is determined to avenge the humiliation of Russia, just as Hitler was determined to avenge the German loss of World War I. People like that, obsessing about past perceived wrongs, have led the world into very bad places.

Petroleum product production is a dying industry. Either we get out of the burning of all carbon based fuels, which would shut the demand for petroleum off, or we will cause two rather serious and nasty things to happen. One is causing the destruction of the biosphere making the planet uninhabitable for oxygen breathing life forms. The second thing would be the rising atmospheric temperatures will cause the melting of the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps, thus raising the seal levels to extreme levels. Such a calamity would cause huge losses of life and the loss of large land areas. Either way the need for oil goes south in a hurry.

The fact this was posted eight years ago and the same issue hasn't been resolved, is a bit startling.

OK, but there is still a thing called Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), so Russia cannot use nuclear weapons without regard for the consequences. NATO's forces far outgun Russia's conventional forces. We have learned a lot in the last year about how badly trained Russia's armed forces have become, largely due to corrupt senior leadership under Putin and his fellow kleptocrats.
The Western democracies also far outgun everyone else in nuclear weapons. If Russia uses nukes against Ukraine, the Russian forces in Ukraine will be destroyed. Putin has made a huge foolish mistake and his hubris and giant ego won't let him back down. I think that Putin will be overthrown or assassinated in the not-too-distant future.

I certainly hope you are correct. I know I somehow see the Russian People reacting as their predecessors did in 1917. Rise up and shite can the entire government edifice. Hopefully this time they will be a bit better prepared to install a government that actually puts them first. Norway would be a pretty good model for them to copy....

I do believe that if I were President of the United States, I would dispatch a "Special Envoy" to speak with Putin. I would inform him that the United States has a large number of nuclear weapons. Our position in this matter is, the United States would consider any nuclear attack on the Ukraine or NATO Allies to be an attack on the United States and we would act accordingly. Putin may be an extreme narcissist, but he is not stupid. It would appear to me that he is using these threats of nuclear weapons as a tool to get us to stop supporting the Ukrainian people. Call his bluff and see who blinks first. A dangerous move but one that must be taken or we will forever be abandoning our allies because of threats of nuclear weapons by Russia. If we don't stop him in the Ukraine, then when? Where is the line in the sand? The coast of the United States?

First off, he is aware that if he uses as nuke weapon at all that he will be nuked by the free world. And then if this occurs he inturn would launch his arsenal on us and Europe. I understand that he's not in the best of health which might be causing him to not think rationally. I would hope to God if he did order the use of nukes that a General or someone in charge refuses to pass on the launch orders.
