Are we doing our youths any favors by insulating them from the often violent world that surrounds them? Or does it make more sense to teach them the discipline of the gun?

Unfortunately, you are correct, it won't happen but that SHOULD happen and we should go back to teaching our children true civics, not the marxist propaganda being taught at all levels of education. Teachers are permitted to have their own opinions but they should not "imprint" them on susceptible young minds.

In recent years, several of us in my survivor group have asked this same question (yeah, we're old farts so we remember the clubs) and expanded it to ask if we should be putting teenage children through a skills camp, for a year (or longer), that will provide many of the same tools we gained in boot (including firearm training). Surprisingly, boot was also responsible for teaching us how to get along with strangers so that ALL of us survived. What a concept!

1stLt Steven P. - Why do you think American Civics were removed from high school curriculum? Most idiots have no idea how our government works, or how it is implemented. They scream "Democracy" as if that is the be all and end all of our country. None of them realize that states are fairly autonomous and can enact their own laws, up to and including, ignoring federal laws (Marijuana legalization). They have no idea that the Federal Government has no power or authority to over ride what a state does within it's state as long as it does not violate the constitution.

My first experience with the NRA was learning to fire a 22 cal. at Boy Scout summer camp. I then was able to hone my firing skills with air rifle marksmanship at JROTC my senior year of high school. My favorite rifle to fire, ever, was the M14 in college at VMI. Recently re-sighted the scope on my 30-30 and didn't enjoy it half as much as that M14.

Firing .22 rifles a summer camps, same thing in local areas that were safe, ie sandpits , place with a good natural backstop for fired rounds etc. We learned how to shoot and safely handle firearms and never had a problem. A lot of us had the over and under.22 4.10 shotgun combo firearms.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - Not sure that it really fits in with the "normal" and safe practice of your camp scene, but our fav outing was to sneak out a couple of horses at first light, mount up with .22 rifles and head for the trash dump by the Kentucky River. It took a while to become proficient hitting rats from the saddle, but we figured it was providing a public service and worth the practice. Ah, those were the days...

We should bring that gun clubs even if it's just to teach firearm safety.

In the fifties in Texas gun safety and marksmanship was taught in many youth organizations including the scouts and church camps. Just about every boy had a gun. Since safety was constantly drilled into us I never knew of anyone shooting anyone including themselves. Maybe in big cities but not in the country towns.

As I recall, none of those gun groups included the local girls. Too bad, as some I knew could outshoot all of us, but they also should be included in the idea of community training. Nobody influences children like their mama, and including those same girls early on could mean a different future for all of us.
