There has been a few post on RP about college educations and what they can do for you in life. But do you think it is fair to say someone is unknowledgeable to be president with no college degree? Should a college degree be a requirement to become President?

Her is a little Excerpt from Howard Dean from MSNBC's Morning Joe:

DEAN: The issue here is not just an issue of dancing around the question of evolution for political reasons, the issue is how well educated is this guy? And that's a problem.

SCARBOROUGH: Are you serious?

DEAN: I am absolutely serious.

DONNY DEUTSCH: He didn't finish his senior year so he didn't get all that stuff.

SCARBOROUGH: Are you serious? You're saying he might not be qualified because he didn't finish college?

DEAN: I think there are going to be a lot of people who worry about that.

SCARBOROUGH: Do you worry about people that don't finish college?

DEAN: I worry about people being President of the United States not knowing much about the world and not knowing much about science. I worry about that.

SCARBOROUGH: Oh my God. Let's name the people that didn't finish college that have changed this world.

DEAN: Harry Truman, who was a great president, there's no question about it.

SCARBOROUGH: Did Bill Gates finish college?

DEAN: I think Bill Gates is a little different -- nobody is accusing Scott Walker of having the intellect of Bill Gates.

SCARBOROUGH: Well, nobody is accusing Scott Walker of being dumb because he didn't graduate from college except you.

DEAN: I didn't say dumb, I said unknowledgeable.

SCARBOROUGH: Well what's the difference between Scott Walker not graduating from college and Bill Gates not graduating from college?

Every time I look at Howard Dean, I cannot help but remember the skit from the Chapelle show.

I've got a college degree from a state school. What would Mr. Dean say about that?

I agree with most everything thing I have read in this thread about a college edumacation, not everyone is cut out for college degree, some are more cut for technical school or even just the school of common sense to make it in life. As history does show us, most of the great titans of this nation did not have college degrees or even finish high school. As I have told most of my friends and colleagues with children and planning out their college degrees, think twice about whether they are college material.

Also, why is our Government now requiring a college degree for almost any job since Obama came to office?

I don't like Scott Walker, but I do not see a degree as a must have, if he was elected to office as governor I think twice at least? Then clearly he knows something about what he is doing even if I don't like that something.

Is this conversation any different than how the military looks at degrees? We can't be officers unless we have a degree. The ability to get past SFC would be rather difficult (some might say impossible) without a college degree. While I agree that a college education should not be a requirement for a individual to become President, how is this any different than serving as an officer in the any of the services?

Personally I don't believe a college degree should be mandatory for any enlisted position. Back in the day there was a distinct difference between officer and enlisted. Not saying you shouldn't try to further your education it just shouldn't be a requirement for enlisted. In my opinion thats why there are warrant officers. But we are evolving and change is inevitable. It was just a matter of time before the lines between officer and enlisted became closer and obscured.
