I have been dealing with this a lot. I have seen both ways. As per AR 600–25 the junior person should salute. I see a 1LT senior to a 2LT and I salute them. I have seen many instances where this does not happen. Most see a LT as a LT regardless of being a 1st or 2nd. How do you all feel about this?
"B. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled to the salute. Salutes will be exchanged between officers (commissioned and warrant) and enlisted personnel, and with personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States..."

I agree every higher ranking above your own should be given the respect of a salute. As a Warrant I much more of a lot of things than a 2 LT or 1 Lt but I also have respect for their rank and willingness to become a leader so I happily acknowledge them with a salute. They should do the same with each other as well.

1st Lt is senior... only exception to Junior-to-Senior ranking is for MoH... ALL salute the recipient first.

Oh... might be another exception... Marine officer to naval ships captain (regardless of rank)... when they are both aboard the naval 'captain' is God

Looking back though the RP posts, this is an infamous post! It has to be one of the most popular posts in RP history!

Should a Captain salute a Major ... or a Colonel salute a General? Should a child salute their parent or vise versa, how about siblings? Regardless of regulations it a part of basic protocol and respect. It's the little things like begs the question of what do we allow to slip today that we ask "How did we get here?", "Who does that Soldier belong too?", or "Who is responsible for their blatant disrespect?". This leads to the blind leading the blind. There is a desperate need to return the the "Raw" basics.

Let me pose a more interesting question: Do officers of the same rank salute each other? I had one briefing that said they exchange salutes simultaneously. According to 1LT Eric Rosa's quote, they do although I have rarely seen equal rank officers do it. One thing I also tell the cadet groups I work with--always think if the salute as a mutual greeting between 2 brother (sister) members of the profession of arms--the junior merely initiates, but remember the senior is saluting YOU back as a fellow member of the team!

1SG Michael Blount - Yes a 1LT does outrank a 2nd; I brought up a different question that is even more interesting with two officers of the same rank salute each other by a captain to a captain or a first lieutenant to a first lieutenant?

Sir - while they could really get into a pissing contest over who's the more senior (and therefore establishing hierarchy), my guess is they'll have come to an informal understanding beforehand

MAJ Bedgood,
Excellent point. Too many egos have convoluted the simple. I wish you were mentor to many more around you.

Per Reg, yes, but if the 1LT tells you not to salute him, wouldn't that be an order from a superior officer? Just stirring the pot here. :)

And in questioning if it would be a lawful order since it does go against regulation, to caveat on that, would the course of action be taking the easy wrong or committing to the hard right?

Prudence is a scarce commodity! My point of view, if you are in a public area where you can be seen by others, render the salute, regardless. If your are in a place, such as the officer's work area (in my case, a maintenance facility), respect their wishes. Remembering that the strongest influence you have over others is the silent example you show, would best guide this dilemma into conclusion.
