I have been dealing with this a lot. I have seen both ways. As per AR 600–25 the junior person should salute. I see a 1LT senior to a 2LT and I salute them. I have seen many instances where this does not happen. Most see a LT as a LT regardless of being a 1st or 2nd. How do you all feel about this?

"B. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled to the salute. Salutes will be exchanged between officers (commissioned and warrant) and enlisted personnel, and with personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States..."

When I was back in the 1980s they would salute each other regardless of rank its called respect. It should never change

That would be the same as a cpt not saluting a major. Its militar custom and its in the regs. Honestly why is this even a question?

It seems so simple. I would even ask why this is the most commented question on RP. That is something to it. Not all sides see it the same but all sides seem to think they are right.

I would like to thank all of you. This post has came so far and has also led to be getting an award. I don't know what I would have done without all of your contributions. Actually there really isn't an answer yet. So does a 2LT salute a 1LT?

i feel that a 2nd lieutenant ought to salute a 1st lieutenant...an ensign in the navy salutes a ltjg!

You would be led to before that. It only means sense. I am one of the few LTs that agree with you.

I can not believe this is still going on lol. It is a very simple concept. Here it is! You ready!? All enlisted from E1 to Sgt Maj of etc Salute EVERY commisioned officer from O1 to any 4/5 star. Every officer salutes a higher ranking officer. You asking if a 2nd lt should salute a 1st lt because they are both Lt's is the same as asking if a Major should salute a Lt. Cl. because they both have oaks leaves or if a Lt. Cl. should salute a full bird because they are both (colonels) or if a 1 star should salute a 2 3 4 5 star. Please end this topic. There is only 1 answer!!!

I can remember not saluting a 1LT when first assigned to a unit in Germany and it took me a long time to get the words out of my head why it was wrong just to walk by and not salute. Yes, by al means a 2LT should salute a 1LT.

I would say it would depend on the service. In the Corps the answer would be no.

SSG Maurice P. MAJ Dennis Malone Gentlemen, I don't think I follow your comments. This seems like a cultural quirk, maybe it changed from how it was in some yester-year, or maybe you've made some assumptions about the service like others here appear to have. I'm still waiting for a Marine officer to pipe up contradicting me on this. CPT (Join to see) Any luck running down those conflicting viewpoints?

SSG Maurice P., That would be why the first statement I offered was a possibility of a change from an earlier custom. Easy on those capitals.

Saluting is the military's unique way of greeting someone. It is also an old tradition to salute your own peers. My own experience shows me that the best officers have the most healthy self-esteem and are positive and, optimistic and confident. The best offcers I've encountered are the ones who enthusiatically use all military courtesies.

I think the legalistic view of this damages the customs of the Army. I am not saying that it is going to lead to the demise of the officer corps but when you compromise one standard the easier it comes. I don't like wearing Eye pro all the time but I still do it because it is what I am supposed to do.

MAJ Carl Ballinger I just checked AR 600-25 for this custom about 2LT not saluting 1LT and never found it. In that case wouldn't the folklore of this custom that is not written be in fact the custom that was never the standard.

Our LT was around us a lot in the 82nd and after the first salute he would say I will be in the Area do not salute me again, I do not want my arm to fall off. I guess my point is do not over do it, yet follow the regs.

1LT Leo Sudnik, I recommend you create a new discussion post all together entailing this and other excitingly mundane matters so you could get a maximum spotlight. And Rallypoints, don't forget Rallypoints. Never forget!
