I have been dealing with this a lot. I have seen both ways. As per AR 600–25 the junior person should salute. I see a 1LT senior to a 2LT and I salute them. I have seen many instances where this does not happen. Most see a LT as a LT regardless of being a 1st or 2nd. How do you all feel about this?

"B. All Army personnel in uniform are required to salute when they meet and recognize persons entitled to the salute. Salutes will be exchanged between officers (commissioned and warrant) and enlisted personnel, and with personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States..."

What 2Lt's and 1Lt's do when they are among themselves is between them but when they are around soldiers as per AR 600-25 or Fm 22-5 or FM17-21 Junior Soldiers salute Senior Officers period, To not do so show a lack of respect. How can you as a leader expect your soldiers to show proper courtesy when you are not leading by example. A 1lt out ranks a 2Lt the last time I looked, Would you not salute your company commander if he was a 1LT? Come on gentlemen a regulation is a regulation no matter how much you disagree with it. Show the proper respect. Be a professional.

I just read the sections on saluting in AR 600-25 and FM 7-21.13... they could definitely be clearer.<br>

I do not dispute AR 600-25 but my understanding is that juniors salute seniors. My question is, because I cannot find it anywhere, where does it say that LTs are equal in rank. They are not equal in pay grade so where does it say they are peers? Not trying to bust any chops here, just want to know where that comes from. I know that different services have different customs and traditions and they are usually written somewhere. I just want to see it in writing or in absent of any proof, then AR 600-25 stands in force where it says juniors salute seniors.

AR 600-20 states that a 2LT is outranked by a 1LT.  That's good enough for me.  If they're an officer, and they outrank me, I salute them...in public.

What we warrants do among ourselves is another issue.

I'm not sure how it works in the army or other branches. In the Marines, every officer salutes and calls sir/ma'am to any other officer that is above him/her.

Yes, we as leaders need to set the example for our subordinates. 2LT's should salute a 1LT, just as a NCO should stand at Parade Rest for a NCO that is senior to him/her.

I think they should. Just the same as sgt stands at parade rest for a Ssg. It's a sign of respect

I agree as well. In the NCO ranks (having been an NCO), if two NCO's are of the same rank, but one is in a position of authority over the other, the NCO in the junior position should stand at parade rest out of respect for positional authority. I believe the same should be true for two 1LT's or two CPT's... although that is not exercised either (very often and based on command policy). I agree with your example.

Of course a 2LT should salute a 1LT. Obviously, many officers and enlisted have an established norm of allowing them not to salute, but that opens up a Pandora's box. It starts with not saluting, then having to explain it to enlisted Soldiers why the regulation is not being adhered to. IG has a great mantra of regulation. It falls under two categories: don't know, or won't comply.enforce the standard, folks!

Regs state that the junior renders the salute as a sign of honor and recognition. No matter if it is one rank it is still junior. That does not stop the hazzing and harrasing of junior officers but that is part of the military also.

This is insane. As a senior NCO, officers entrust me to enforce policies. This should not even be an issue when black and white states plainly they should. No where in the regulation does it state...Because they are Lieutenants its okay not to salute. Just because I am not an officer does that in any shape mean I don't know how to read the regulation. People want leeway when it conveniences them. That's the same excuse someone gives me about why their hair or nails look the way they do...when I correct them that is. If you don't like it, change the black and white, and then I will enforce it. As you so rightly expect me too as an NCO.

There is nothing wrong with being professional and I have heard the comment about people being mean to 2LTs.   That could be interpreted as being disrespect.

With all respect sir I disagree, often times there is vast gap in experience between a 2LT and a 1LT especially after the last 10 years of combat. &nbsp; An LT isn't just an LT. &nbsp; That tarnished bar shows that one of them has stayed in long enough to have one or more experiences that helped them develop into a stronger leader. &nbsp; They are no longer peers at that point.
