I also think that we have gone all over the world for our country why cant the veterans get free passports by just taking our DD-214 to the pass port office with the filled out application. In reality what would it cost the government to give Veterans this as a perk?

I'll nitpick the passport idea. Be careful about grubbing around for more entitlement. If Joe American knew all the stuff Vets and especially retired get, backlash is likely. Support of Vets is a cultural concept thing, not an analytical decision knowing all the bennies out there. VA and TriCare are astute in posting the medical services meet ObamaCare Minimums. It is vastly more service at a vastly cheaper (free) price. So if you rub people's noses in it that have to shell out $1200/mo for their family of four, then you just created an Anti-Veter. The other notion is what the heck more are you owed? You sign up on current contract, perform your time, and receive what you signed up for. How did you get hosed? The recent expansion of BX/NEX online sales to Vets has much more to do with the "Ka-ching Factor" in improving the financial side of the equation. Didn't see any particular bleeding heart initiative out there for doing more for the Vets although that's how they spin it.

CAPT Kevin B. I agree. When I was discharged in 1972, there were no perks. I appreciate the things that are available now.

This is what I said on another post concerning veterans day discounts. I rarely mention that I am a Veteran. When asked I do state that I am a veteran and some times I will mention I am a service connected disabled Veteran. For my part I went in and did my job, it wasn't for praise or for a slap on the back it was to follow a tradition of service and to fulfill a duty to my country I felt we all owe. The only thing I have ever expected from my time in service was what I was promised when I enlisted nothing more and nothing less. I't isn't that I am ashamed of my time in service far from it, it is just that I did my time in service for my beliefs and what I felt is right not to boast to others or for free meals once a year. The only reason I don't think that my service is to be a banner announcement there are to many hero's not coming home to get their slap on the back or free meals or discounts. When they personally get theirs I will be happy to talk more freely about what I might get. You can look it up if you like the only reason I have brought any of these questions to light wasn't for me but for another veteran. I have a Passport have had for quite a while and I have my disabled veterans card. By the way I am also the youngest of 4 brothers (3 Vietnam and era)that have served 2 have passed so far from service related issues and I am 100% service connected disabled.

A personal passport is for personal travel. I do not see a need for this to be paid for by the taxpayers.

As I have said before the question was on behalf of another veteran. As far as the cost that could be recouped by cutting the spending on illegals.

Personally I don't think we need free passports. That's not why I signed the dotted line. I just want them to keep the promises they made when I joined - that's enough.

Personally I agree and have for years but you have to fight them tooth and nail to get them to do it. The above question was asked on behalf of another veteran. But I do think they should all have the ID card instead of having to drag out their DD-214 for every thing.
