Should army and marines consolidate
Think objectively. Traditions, camaraderie aside. Both are somewhat similarly more combat-oriented than USN or USAF. Answer practically without putting down either one of them.

PS: Yes, some are taunting about USN and USAF consolidation or Air Force return to Army Air Corps. My take on that if it's practical, lessen bureaucracy, and make for a smoother communications pipeline amongst the DoD components, why not? Again, camaraderie and traditions aside for a min.

Perhaps, the army should roll into the Marines instead. Think of the PFT. The marines are known as the president's own and does not need congressional approval for the most part. Utilization of the Army requires congressional approval. The army is also an occupying force. The Marines are not... get in get out.

Completely false statement about the Marines not needing congressional approval to operate and the Army needing it. Congress declares war as per the U.S. Constitution, but the commander and chief has the congressional authority to deploy forces with specific requirements for notifying Congress and receiving Congressional approval if deployments go beyond specific timelines, regardless of the composition of the deployed forces.

It is also a falsehood that the Army is merely an "occupying force". Both the Army and Marine Corps are designed to close with and kill the enemy, but the Marines are not structured for long-term occupations the way the Army is. Both branches share the same role as theater-level strategic reserves to deploy quickly to support contingency operations, noncombatant evacuation operations, etc (MEUs and Airborne BCTs, specifically). Both the Marines and the Army can be the designated joint forces land component command (JFLCC) as part of a joint task force.

CPT Bobby Fields - these are not false statements, but may have changed since I have left. AS well, your enlisted seems to agree with my views as well Captain..

Sgt Dennis Loncon I think you need to do a little more research on the defined roles of both the Army and the USMC based on service and joint doctrine.

No, the Marines have a different mission from the army. I mean they do some things the army doesn't, for instance, embassy guards, navy ship security. I am retired army, but in 1964 (holy crap), I attended second ITR at San Onofre.

No, you have a history of proud service in those specific branches. Any Veteran will tell you of what that means to them, especially Marines. Leave it alone, we Army people are still pissed off about taking the black berets away from the Rangers. That was wrong. Do not make another mistake like that.

With all the advanced technology, if it makes a better Miltary I'd say it's the way to go. It's a tough question! Each branch should hold on to some traditions if they do.

All the branches are combat oriented. They all have different jobs. The Army seems to be spread thin, with too many units as is. Why try to give them another job? And, if you think they both do the same job, think again. The Marines take the land, and the Army turns it into a garrison. The Marines do more with less, while the Army has a “more is better” philosophy. The Marines conquer air land and sea. The Army concentrates on controlling land that has already been conquered. When was the last time you saw an Army Brigade pulling Security on a Navy ship? Exactly.

Ridiculous to consider this. It’ll be a training/retraining nightmare, and in the end there will no longer be extremely effective separate branches, there will be one mediocre branch.

ALL branches need to be streamlined and they most definitely need unilateral comms capability and training but to merge branches unless it is to combine The Corp with USN would prove to be too much trouble!!

No, in the Marines you don’t join it you become one. Besides who wants to wear a beret?
