Should army and marines consolidate
Think objectively. Traditions, camaraderie aside. Both are somewhat similarly more combat-oriented than USN or USAF. Answer practically without putting down either one of them.

PS: Yes, some are taunting about USN and USAF consolidation or Air Force return to Army Air Corps. My take on that if it's practical, lessen bureaucracy, and make for a smoother communications pipeline amongst the DoD components, why not? Again, camaraderie and traditions aside for a min.

A common logistics corps would may work fine, and probably save a lot of money at the same time. Leave the rest alone.

Well, spec ops already consolidated, and I think engineering corps could also be combined

PO1 (Join to see) Special Operations already consolidated? I was unaware that SEALS, Special Forces, MARSOC, Ranger Regiment, etc all left their respective branches.
Yes, they have a Joint HQs that manages Special Operations, but they did not consolidate out of their own services.

So I just came across this post and felt the need to answer. Why would we combine the Navy's fighting force? Regardless of how they feel about themselves, there IS NO Department of the Marines. They work for the Navy. They are transported on Navy equipment and they get their officers from the Navy. It works, to combine the two different departments would be foolhardy. The Army does not understand Navy stuff (the only reason I do is I did some Navy time before going Army).
All of this being said, the Marines have their own traditions which have been mentioned in a lot of posts previous.

The jobs they do are way to dissimilar. Besides, if they consolidated they would be moving from under one major branch (Navy) to make another. As much as we give the Marines crap, I enjoy the fact that the Department of the Navy can do everything on a fairly large scale (air, land and sea) where the AF is primarily just Air and the Army is primarily the ground with a few exceptions. The tradition of our warfare the tip of the spear is always Navy or Marines, then the Army and Air Force come in as the main force. If anyone consolidates it should be back to the Army Air Corps for the Air Force.

I beg to differ as to consolidating USAF back to Army. USAF has become far too complex in itself. It does not just involve flying planes, but patrolling entire airspace reaching out into outer space with its missions. Army and Marines are solely focused on ground fighting, tactics, and assaulting. Both have grunts, tanks, artillery, and other combat-intensive gear and training. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but aside from culture and traditions, I've witnessed scores of similarities between the two branches' missions and modes of operations. Thank you for your response, CPO (Join to see)!

Should be 1 Military Police. We all work together and have patrolled together. Except for the Uniform our training and Jobs are the same. I'm a Former Army Military Police Sgt. In the past, I don't know about the present we all patrolled together when deployed. My unit and I have patrolled together with Marine Military Police, Airforce Police etc. Sometimes we policed the Marines while their M.Ps were located miles away with another unit in country etc. The M.P.s I know feel that they rise above all else and Uphold the highest Standards. We Represent the Military conduct and live the values. As we all know uphold and enforce the Uniform code of military Justice. I could see this being The United States Military Police Corps. with a higher consolidated training and knowledge of all the services merging and just being one. Right now, the M.P's are a Duplication of service which is unnecessary. The M.P.Corps Should be under their own budget. and put out their to Police our Military, all of the branches from the same Office.

Thank you Mike. Being a Navy Master-At-Arms and having to work joint forces with all other branches MPs I could definitely find the 'merger' intriguing

Just an opinion. My personal thoughts. Our interests are to protect and assist all the service branches. I think it could work????

I think they should consolidate as far as support services goes. Specialty jobs should retain their symbols, awards, badges, dress uniform for tradition. But support services are the same across the board and should be interchangeable.

When you say specialty jobs, do you refer to combat and operations jobs? Because both branches may have somewhat differing doctrines, but the core behind overall missions still remains the same: killing enemy, securing area, communicating, extracting personnel/equipment, etc... Please elaborate.

I agree on consolidating support services, and it has been widely practiced by joint-force tasking various branches when needed, just that why can't Army's and Marine's operational forces be more combined other than for sentimental reasons

There has been on again, off again talk for years about consolidating the support parts of the armed forces, I think the hardest part of it is what to call it, and should they combine overall. There is an understanding that there is a rich history in each branch. There was talk about just calling it "US Armed Forces"

There is also a lot to work out if they combined the support what uniform would they wear, what about medals they received and who would be the deciding factor for who goes where. I hope it does happen one day, too many units go without. the other problem is people thinking that one branch is better than the other. We are all the same, we all put on our uniforms and serve our country and some people need to get over themselves.

only if the Marines are in charge, the army has to many rules in combat and they get people killed. The Marines have rules but this rules combat I believe

It is nice to read the responses with some actual perspective and it is always refreshing to read a comment from someone who has broad experience. I simply served as a wheeled vehicle mechanic in a combat engineer battalion conducting route clearance missions. I would not feel comfortable espousing how much greater the Army is over the Marines from my limited 4 year active duty experience in a particular unit. It is just too narrow of an experience and I think it is important to acknowledge that. I understand pride is the root of much of the strong convictions, but the truth lies in the middle as it does in most circumstances. Both branches are successful in what they do and could always learn from each other's strengths. To make a statement regarding the larger question: Should the Army and Marines consolidate? Seems to me the answer is no. There are no high level talks that I know of regarding the issue, thus I come to the conclusion that the individuals entrusted in evaluating such issues/questions have determined it unnecessary in the current and near future DoD structure.

I'm not asking whether the issue in the talks. Just wanted to hear service members' and veterans' opinions on consolidating the two services with seemingly similar missions but differing SOPs and protocols.

They could easily consolidate maybe their Military Police forces. The Airforce, Army and Marines. I have been on patrol with all three. Very similar training very similar duties. Very high spiritdcorp. Very motivated and always looking to protect and asssit eachother and their fellow Marines , Army, Airforce , U.S military in general. We police all branches of the service.

Personally, I think we should disband all Army/Navy/Air Force SPEC OPS and combat arms, disband all Marine Corps non-combat arms, have the Marines take over the combat arms and SPEC OPS functions for ALL branches, have the Army there for land logistical support, and the Navy for sea support and transportation. As far as the Air Force is concerned, pop their inventory over to the Army and Navy, make all of them DoD civilians, and have them in charge of cyber and space command as part of Homeland Security.

Yeah this would piss a lot of people off (I was artillery for a few years and I know the lineage), but let's face it-the Marines do combat better than the other branches and with the Army's leftovers-imagine what they could do with a real budget.
