I believe beer should be provided for every holiday overseas. It's a morale booster to be able to drink during the Super Bowl, so why not make it a tool for CDR's on holidays to give the yay or nay??

Honestly, I think GO#1 sometimes does more harm than good. Yeah it keeps soldiers "dry" downrange (but it's not like you can't find it if you REALLY want it), but it also encourages binge drinking when you get home. Sometimes I wish we could adopt a more mature approach to it like our European allies.

LTC Paul Labrador When I was in Kandahar I saw a LOT of soldiers who apparently became "very concerned" about their oral hygiene judging by the amounts of mouth wash they were buying.

When I was at the IHT at FOB Union III in the Green Zone, we had access to PX in the US Embassy across the street. Embassy staff (to include assigned military contingent) are not subject to GO#1. Their PX had a full Class 6! >.<

Of course, in Baghdad, all you had to do was ask a local or TCN and you could EASILY find whatever you wanted...

I agree Sir, you prohibit something from a soldier for a year that they were accustomed to having back home, it will lead most to abusing it upon initial return.

Oh the old mouthwash trick! That's when red flags should of propped up for first line supervisors.

I say yay! Everyone needs a beer once in while. But I stress the "A" beer part. Can't be getting buzzed or drunk

Exactly! Limited to 1 would be fine on key holidays.

Should beer be provided on EVERY holiday overseas? It's provided for the Super Bowl

I was not allowed a beer for the Super Bowl when I was deployed. I think overall a bad idea as with every safeguard there is always someone who will ruin it for the rest. Also, do you really want people drinking if at any time they can get hit and have to respond? Overseas for deployment there is no off-duty though I know many who treated it as if they did.

I fully agree on there being Blue Falcons out there. The same situation would go for the Super Bowl then, everyone has a 2 beer limit that is maintained by their unit's respective training room NCO which would eliminate the problem of being inebriated. No off-duty but there are times for the soldiers to rest and refit. You can't expect not to take a day off after being out on an air assault for a couple days.

My dad would tell me about MWR parties where units were supplied a monthly stipend by MWR to buy beer and BBQ and have a monthly unit party. He was in a quite some time ago and I know my stint in the Marines showed no such monthly parties. However, he did state that these monthly beer parties went along way towards unit cohesion and espirit de corps. This would have been in the 50's, 60's & 70's BTW. For that time it seems a legitimate unit tool, however, back then rules were a little different.

Right, so it should be limited in the amount of alcohol a single person can consume along with certain key holidays. Morale booster for a lot of soldiers and would help deter binge drinking back home.

I don't think it's a good idea for EVERY holiday. Especially for my brothers and sisters on ships. I think it'll lead to problems. It may be a morale booster, but alcohol really isn't necessary.

I've never seen alcoholic beverages offered overseas. Then again I don't drink.

SSG Robert Pierce I deployed last July on my birthday... we all went out and picked up liquor and were then given the order of "no alcohol" for the 24 hours prior to departure. That sucked.

I remember we were authorized to have a alcohol beverage card when we were on our way back from Deployment. But not in country.

For every federal holiday? There are a lot of holidays. Also, General Order #1 seems to ward off evil spirits. Even if I were the approving authority, I am not sure I would allow it.

Yeah their are haha but it would be at the discretion of the CDR. Obviously they wouldn't do it for back to back weeks. We are allowed to drink back in garrison, why not overseas when they allowed you to do so. Also, the NCOs will only allow those soldiers that are responsible. This is just a general idea that would come along with plenty of fail-safe's.

It's like the civilian social host law, at what point does the military become responsible vs. the individual SM when something bad happens due to over-indulgence?

No, I don't understand why it would be provided at all. Just because it is the Superbowl? We should not be drinking while deployed anytime.
