Should former marines who join another service give up the title
I first joined the Army and after my enlistment, I joined the Marine Corps. I no longer call myself a Soldier, but a Marine. Should former Marines give up the title of Marine once they join another branch of service? It's analogous to a woman taking the name of her husband, then once the marriage has ended, she re-marries and takes her new husband's name. Me, I'm married to the Corps!

I always ask this...if you were and are a Marine...why did you quit? You walked away from "what you are?" I was a Warrant Officer, I'm retired now, I'm still a Warrant. Hell, I can't get folks to STOP calling me Chief!!

Please know, I'm not trying to be a smartass. It's just a way of thinking I don't understand. If you stayed in, and then got out or retired, then I got it...agree 100%. But you quit that and became a Soldier.

Why would you want to? It has been nearly 50 years since I went through Ranger School, but you don't grow out of it. Same with a Marine. S/he is liable to carry the handle "Jarhead" at the team level of the Army, but it will be like an oral Ranger Tab. If you go to the any other military organization, the French Foreign Legion and you earn the handle "Jarhead", it's their way of saying you earned your spurs before Jesus had a jock strap and let's ante up and deal the next hand.

Worry about something important, like the fire power cycling around you marked "General Delivery" or "To Whomever It May Concern".

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem.

Give up the title, how, by "drumming out? Unless someone brings dishonor they are a Marine for life. If they move to another service they need to be loyal to that service. If you have to remind others that you were once a Marine you're wasting time better spent doing your job in the new branch. There are "ex" Marines, same as there are ex-spouses. They are the result of failing to keep up your end of the bargain. Years ago they physically took the title by "drumming you out". I believe that practice ceased in 1962.

MSgt Daniel Schrubb. I think you answered your own question. You wrote" former" Marines and if they are former and joined a different service they should lose their Marine title. They can tell someone they are a former Marine but are Army, Navy, Airforce, or Coast Guard now.

You can keep the Corps. For the record, you're the only person I've ever even heard of who joined the Navy after being in the Army.

I have served side by side with Marines and several former Marines. Even though I love getting under their skin by calling them "ex", as long as they served honorably, they should have the title regardless of where they are in life.

I have no problem being labeled "Conventional". Just as I'm sure you don't mind fighting the "Hearts and Minds" campaign with words. Marines have a great commercial where they climb a mountain, kill a dragon, and turn into a Marine. The also have better uniforms than everyone else, but that's pretty much all I see. 0311's are the only one's that get my respect. The rest are POG's.

I will always be some one who joined the military and served my country. To go beyond that you're just puffing your chest. Get over yourselves.

Its not about puffing our chests, its about pride in your service, your country, your traditions and accomplishments. Reading through some of the other questions posted on rally point, that seems to be what is most respected about the Marines over other service.

That's the great thing about our country you can have your opinion and voice it.

I know that certain aspects of your branch can and would have the same type of pride in their distinctive units - just like us in the Marines.

So, even though you think people are puffing their chests in your eyes - doesn't mean that is the case (we have an inner part to us that doesn't need to boast - but does show itself in all our accomplishments, and things we do for the good of others).

So, in my respect - I will never get over myself - I was and forever will consider myself a Marine.

If I had been on one of those 9/11 aircraft - we wouldn't have lost it - I would have used every once of my being to terminate those cowards - that is how full of myself I am in my being considered a Marine.

Enjoy your Army career while you are still in and I thankyou for your service.

I think people take this forum far too seriously. I love my service, I love my country and I love my fellow military brothers. I would do anything for a brother, that I could.

I really love learning about leadership from more experienced troops and this gives me some perspective.

Lastly, I think we all imagine ourselves in a certain way, while our friends, subordinates and leaders may have a different take.

While in the USAF, every supervisor and commander I served under and would always bring up the fact that I was an asset to the unit due to all the experience, training, knowledge and professionalism that I brought with me as a Marine to our unit and base.

I did not go around bragging that I had come from the Marines - it showed in how I conducted myself in everything I did.

Our unit had every branch covered (prior service members at one time out numbered the ones straight out of basic for quite some time).
