I have been in the military almost 20 years. I have worked with Local, State and Federal LEOs. I have worked with and taught Sister Service LEO’s. But what has always got me is that USAMPs are the only Military LEOs that are not issued a Badge. I have heard the old arguments that “Joe” will mis-use the badge somehow someway. But now with LEOSA and Military LEOs able to carry wouldn’t it make sense to issue badges and wear them while on duty.

1st will that Badge make you better MP or some sort of Super MP Like CPT America and his shield. Would it make you more professional or compassionate?
Do you really think that people (Soldiers and Civilians) don't know who you are or maybe its a inferiority complex that MP's have or something.
How much would it cost the taxpayers and would that MP be help financially liable for damaged, destroyed or lost, stolen Badges, because he uses it to mentally believe he is Bruce Willis. I could go on and on. But for my closing point. We know who the MP's are before they do and that PV2 MP already believes that he is God. As a SSG I'm not standing at parade Rest for you either, here's my license and registration (through the driver's window). And a badge is not going to stop a a$$ whooping on side of the road for treating someone like a mass murderer that only has a busted taillight.

1) as a non MP you don't understand the issue. 2) I can tell from your comment you have probably had "encounters" with MPs 3) Yes they would be held accountable for lost or damaged Badges just like any other issues equipment 4) since this was posted MPs have started to be issued /wear badges on outer-vests 5) (Since you brought it up) If any MP told you to stand at "Parade Rest" while preforming their duties, or told you to exit your vehicle, you would or be apprehended for failure to obey a lawful order. Rank means nothing in this case. Most likely is that were going on I would already be on the way to the scene. If you were to come into the PMO and complain I would ask was he polite? Was he proffessional?

SSG (Join to see) Since you avoided the question of Does it make you a better patrolman?
This falls straight into the civilian side of LEO's, the bad ones tarnish the good ones, the mentality of the MP'S that I've met and yes some, I have befriended and have been knowing for over 15 years, will say how they have pulled positional rank on individual soldiers. Do you do it, I can say cause I don't know you.
In my almost 28 year career I only had 1 run in with a PV2 MP, who claimed that I had pulled out in front of someone, approximately 3-5 minutes later a vehicle passed that the PV2 said I pulled out in front of, FT Irving, CA for you. Long story short his commander and my commander hashed it out.
And by all means, you may arrest me for a UCMJ infringement but I be damn if I stand at parade rest for any the same rank or lower than me and that, I earned it wasn't pencilled in by someone on a power trip.
Professionalism is met with professionalism.
I honestly wish you safety in your endeavors and for the record LEO'S don't always get the respect that they deserve. StandFast

SSG Ryan Rink - I did not man to miss the question on purpose I just am answering on a phone at the moment. in the process of a move. Does it make you a Better patrolman....If a badge gives you more pride in your job. Yes. If it want makes you want to equal or exceed yes. When we were in BDUs you could see it in the shine of a patrolman boots and the press of their uniform. If a patrolman rude and unprofessional I deal with them...I expect them utmost professionalism from them. Call people by proper rank and Salute an officer as long as it it not going to put someone in harms way. I have been to posts there a "Barrack Lawyer" said on duty MPs don't have to Salute.. that took me about 3 seconds to fix. MPs can make mistakes and if we do we should own them and learn from them. The problems I have observed in 20 years as an MP are the subject. (if someone is stopped by a MP for any reason) wants to argue the point in the middle of the road way. or they want to pull rank on an MP. I have seen MPs try to deal courteously and professionally with someone of Higher rank and that person try to "Lock them Up" or "flex" on them. That is usually about the time I arrived. As other have stated it would be better to wear a badge an no rank while preforming LE duties because Senors who are being stopped especially see the rank first. I have honestly only seem one MP in my career but a Senior at parade rest and that was because the Senior was being unreasonable and the MP Said ' Sergeant you are Making me nervous for our safety you need to go to Parade Rest. To the SFC credit he did and the rest was completed quickly and professionally with everyone happy with results even the SFC. I did see one where the NCO refused to listen to a "Rutty Put Specialist" and continued to put both his children and MPs in bad position. The MPs did not want to take the NCO down in front of his children. long story short after a beautifully written report the NCO and his entire CoC were in the Garrison Commanders Office on Monday.
Are there bad MPs...hell yes and the good ones try to get them ut as soon as possible. Do complaints about rude MPs work....yes. As a Patrol Supervisor/.Duty Officer I knew my "Weak" MPs and when every they got a call I was heading that way some lacked experience, some just should have never been made MPs. (whole other post)
Good Luck to you also in your endeavors and if you ever need something and I can help here I am

Besides the argument "but I just want one because everybody else has one"
I base my answer of no need on my personal observation of 28 years seven months private e1 to Sergeant Major E9 not once not, ever did I come up on the situation where I thought or said "OG he's an MP boy I didn't know that if He only had been wearing a badge"
If the original poster of the question can explain the specific situations where a badge makes all the difference to been identified as an MP in a timely required manner where the supplied ID card would not I'd be all for it but as a non-MP that is had a significant amount of interaction with MPs I just can't come up with an instance or a badge would've made a difference

MAJ Sheldon Smith
I've tried carrying under LEOSA with a badge and without. My experience has been this: When entering an establishment like a VA hospital or national park, most police and rangers don't immediately recognize my LEOSA ID. Some have said, "What's that." However, when accompanied by the badge, they seem to more readily accept the ID. If you ask my why, I cannot explain it.

MAJ Sheldon Smith - then that is there lack of training not recognizing a lawful ID. Because the Badge alone in any department means nothing unless accompanied by ID. Also REP Bacon has just proposed fixes to the law that will allow carry in places like the VA and stop the BS with states and other organizations trying to circumvent the law.

We should be issued badges upon graduation, just like you would at the police academy and this goes for retired now that we are covered under LEOSA.

My first MP unit issued us badges in 1981 and we wore them on the uniform. However, my second unit did not provide them (in 1983). I don't know why or what the policy is (or was) on issuing badges.
