Some states and counties charge extra for these plates for personal vehicles.  I live in Ohio Columbiana county. I have veteran plates for my truck and don't have to pay any extra for these plates just had to show my license, insurance and a copy of my DD214. I know that in some states the plates I have listed above you are charged extra for them. I like the fact that I don't have to pay for these plates. I feel that as long as you did your time got out under a DD214 that says honorable, retired, or medical discharge you should be able to get the plates listed above at no extra charge so you can place them on your personal vehicle with pride like I do. I look forward to hearing feed back from Vets and also Active duty it is your right to show what you did for our country. Thank You Frank J. Leonardo

I will saw that in My state Veteran plates do cost extra but the $10 they d charge goes toward the veterans homes in Montana.  It is a good way to "create revenue" for a worth while organization while supporting a very good cause.

That is true and I would not mind that as long as it was going to a cause like that. Thanks for the response

Frank, Good points.  In many states the specialty license plates serve as a means to generate revenue for organizations that the plates recognize.  Whether its artistic expression, homes for pets, or to honor our veterans in a variety of ways.  I think we should have to pay for the novelty plates; however, it should vary by type of plate.  For example, a purple heart recipient or a 70% or more disabled vet shouldn't pay as much as a standard veteran plate.  Just my 2 cents...

I have paid extra for my Purple Heart license plate for years.  I have always felt that there were certain plates that should be given for life: MOH, POW, PH, Combat Service just to name a few.  Great Question!

Due to still waiting on the VA's final decision it cost me an extra 20 dollars for my plate here in Maine. Now that I have my 100% P&T decision from the VA my tags are free. But the city here will still charge you through the nose in excise tax.

I have to pay for DV Plates. It’s not as much as a regular plate.

Should veterans have to pay extra for veteran, purple heart, retired, or war license plates for their personal vehicles ?

They charge extra in Oregon. I did my time in the Marine Corps. I’m not paying extra just so everyone else knows I did. I didn’t do it for accolades or appreciation. I did it for my country and my fellow Americans.

I know that in my state the Purple Heart plate does not cost anything, now with that being said I would agree to a small fee if it went towards some sort of veteran benefit program.

I personally think they should be granted as earned benefits.

I wont downvote your comment and before I disagree wholly, I would ask “to whom do you feel should the cost of those plates be passed?”

We should pay what they cost.  I don't see a reason to pay any less.

i could get free military plates but I like the standard ones...once again after 9-11 we were told to remove military symbols, plus removed our DOD stickers from vehicles so we could not be targets. Guess that stuck with me

In my state, you do have to pay a few extra dollars for veteran plates however, what irritates me is when they employ a public facing DMV employee who can't grasp how to read a DD214, this happened to me last year, I have never come across a totally incompetent DMV employee , most display a negative attitude but know the fundamentals of job, in 2019 unemployment rate was under 2% and employers had a terrible time finding qualified entry level people( full employment) and DMV as well as other industries can't keep or hire entry level people at the salary range which in 2019 averaged over 7500 openings in the metro area.

Depends on your disability percentage if you have to pay for your military plates in Louisiana

No. I have disabled veteran plates, which did not require me to pay a cent. That is in Georgia, and I don't even have to pay taxes! As far as veterans you asked about, no again because, like disabled vets, they have served our country, and should get the same treatment. However, they should not be extended to our dependents, they can pay taxes like everyone else.
