Should women be required to register with the Selective Service upon turning 18?

Bonus: Why or why not?

With the fight for equality in the military and the recent decision by the Army to open combat arms MOS's to women in the Army, being so much in the news and discussion, do you think that women of the required Selective Service age group should be made to register as their male counterparts are?

I think you should a mininum of 3 years in the military. Think about it.

1) Unemplyment would go down.
2) Overweight population would go down
3) It can be open to EVERYONE since all restrictions have been eliminated, i.e. gays and women.
4) Most countries in Europe require military service if you dont have a job lined up (We like to copy Europe, and see bullet number 1) you can serve

I dont see why this couldnt work out. Or if anything else, make the National Guard, or Active Guard madatory

It wouldn't work, we can't even maintain a military at our current size. With an abundance of bodies, training, and the quality of gear would suffer as the costs to maintain that size of a military would increase.

So...who is going to pay for the millions of people entering the military, and the millions of people getting VA benefits, as well as child care for the millions of single parents?

Explain to me how we pay for millions of people to join the military (and who is going to train them) when we already can't sustain the people we have in the military right now?

With a larger force, funding would have to be larger. But first we have to have a White House that supports the Military.

Capt Jason Williams, You ask who is going to pay for this!. Everyone is, the need for a draft would be to the point where we are fighting enemies within our borders and far away. I would rather have people able to protect themselves than to have the few Soldiers hold their hands because they do not know what to do.

SFC (Join to see), yes, women should register with the Selective Service System as do men. However, SS registration is not tantamount to being drafted.

That's why I limited my question to "registration" sir... people get way too cranky confusing the two

SFC (Join to see), I understand and that's why I made the original statement! Registering with the SSS is a long way from being drafted. Just thought I'd complete the process so everyone could how it worked from beginning to end!

My issue isn't so much the "fear of being drafted" as much as the many consequences you face for not registering.

I know what you mean SFC (Join to see) My son is 30 and had no interest in the military, but I made sure that he registered with the SSS when he turned 18.

I can say yes to certain to certain MOS, but Infantry I am a little reserved on it, believe it or not I never met a Women Marine, can she take the training that the USMC but us through in 1972, with Motivational Platoon at P.I. many Marines did not endure Motivational Platoon, that is a platoon that you graduate or died, no other way out. I wouldn't want my mother, to be damaged as I am with PTSD, in torture in which they tried to kill Marines, who the regular D.I. deem not discipline enough. They are tough but I don't think they deserved this, I seen people in this platoon who had completely lost their mind. As I said before Congress had ban this training. But not before it cause many casualties. The Marine have been a secretive organization, where you could not track the things of the past. So all I have is believe it or not.

Yes, equal rights equal responsibilities, equal standards.

If women are going to fight to be treated as equally as men by the services then that should include the selective service registration...if you're gonna do it don't do it half way.
