Should women be required to register with the Selective Service upon turning 18?

Bonus: Why or why not?

With the fight for equality in the military and the recent decision by the Army to open combat arms MOS's to women in the Army, being so much in the news and discussion, do you think that women of the required Selective Service age group should be made to register as their male counterparts are?

I'm a firm believer in military training. I would like to see everyone graduating from H S go into the service for at least two years.

Equal pay, equal work, equal registration with the selective service. Fair is fair!

Yep, sounds EQUAL to me!

I think you are right. There will always be people who dont think women should serve or do "manly" jobs. If they want to do the job and can do the job let them. Some may do it better with more care. Just my opinion!!

If women demand equal rights, they should have equal responsibility! If I as an 18 year old male have to register for the draft within so many days of my 18th birthday,or present a compelling reason for not doing so. If we are to treat females the same as males they should meet the same standard as males to register for the draft or face prosecution for failure to do so. I did not register until I was 20 1/2 years old, I had to explain I did not register before then because I was in the active Army in Germany and was not allowed to register until I separated from AD and then registered and was classified 4A, physically qualified but ineligible for draft because I had already serves and was in the IRR. If women truly want to be "Equal" they must subject themselves to the draft AS ALL MALES ARE REQUIRED TO DO ON THEIR 18TH BIRTHDAY!

Why not...they can be in the military so why can't they sign up for selective service???
SFC Shane C. Wilson
Absolutely,
For years women have asked to be treated fairly and equally. In today's world, I believe we're ready for women to be every bit as equal as men. Women are smart, intuitive, and fighters. Sure, some may think that women aren't as physically fit as some would like, but some of the men are the same way too in the Armed Forces; that's why the military is a team, not an individual. I have worked with women Soldiers and women police officers, every time they have performed exceptionally well, as matter of fact, sometimes they perform better than that of their male counterpart.

Our nation has outgrown the Selective Service. It is now a waste of tax-payer dollars. Simply stated -- we should do away with this ancient "service" for men and women.

What waste? having draftees was necessary, and would still be beneficial. Speaking of waste! When I first joined ALL SERVICES HAD THE SAME "FATIGUE OR COMBAT UNIFORM" This changed to the universal Woodland camouflage (BDU) uniform! Then the services separately got into a macho pissing match over developing distinctive copyrighted camouflage patterns and colors for each service. Talk about waste! Five service committees each working to produce a distinctive "combat uniform"! One joint service committee working to develop a single combat uniform would save enormous amounts of money. When the Army changed over from the M-1 , BAR, M-1/2 carbine, M-3, Thompson Sub-MG,M-1918 MG, and the 1911 45 pistol, To the -14, M60, M-1911 45 pistol. The logistics were greatly simplified. The cost savings were enormous. If the military could forget the inter service rivalry over combat uniforms and develop universal combat, armor, aircrew uniforms. We might save enough to strengthen our training, buy a weapons system, or build up our forces. I was in the Air National Guard, my brother went into the Navy submariners. He and I were talking by telephone, he said it was so cold and asked me to send my surplus Air Force parka to him. I sent it and he used it on deck watch. Other crew members borrowed this ideal parka for deck watch. The next time we talked, he praised the parka and said it was a shame he did not have the NSN so e could order more of these parkas. I told him the NSN was on the label in the collar. He made out a requisition and submitted it thru channels. It got as far as base supply, then it was cancelled, the explanation was that this was an Air Force item, the Navy had a similar item and they would have to order that. The fact that this was not as warm, was not considered! Why develop multiple items, for each service, or occupation unless there is good reason, and and equal protection by each item.

CSM Brian Woodall Sergeant Major; I'm not sure if America has "out grown" the draft or has simply lost the courage to implement it. However, in either case the Selective Service is an agency/program which is NOT being used for anything even remotely useful and could be eliminated with a stroke of the pen without causing any difficulty at all.

IF America needed to draft people, then the SSNs could be used (and the draft would have to be for all numbers between two full SSNs (which would eliminate those older and/or younger than the desired age range range) not just "the last two" or "the last three" (which would catch the newborns and the aged).

You have to remember that all those individual service committees studying the same items of kit are absolutely essential to national security because they provide employment to a fairly large number of people with skill sets that would be almost impossible to replace if there was actually any need for them.

YeJ they should enroll, if we are now allowing them in infantry and artillery MOSes, then the Armed Force should have the full talent pool as possible. Not saying I we would see are number if women drafted, but they want to be treated equally, well the here's where the pavement meets the road. With all due regard, to all those who object, I have daughter myself, and is she had to serve. It wouldn't bother me one bit, o would be proud of her. Just saying.

Since we spend hours upon hours learning about equal opportunity then we should apply those lessons across the board. Equal opportunity should mean that both genders have an equal opportunity for privileges, it should also mean that both genders share an load of the burden.

If the Israeli's have there women serve in the military and women in Germany do it... what is the big difference? I think a tour in the military for anyone is a good thing.... it makes boys men and girls women...responsible people....better for our country.
