Or, what other habits are you locked into that began in childhood? When I was growing up I had a toy workbench with wooden pegs that you could drive through a board with a wooden mallet, turn it over, and drive them back the other way. (Sounds frustrating, doesn't it?) Today's kids play with electronic toys that teach them other, more relevant skills to the modern age. Toys are useful that way. However, some believe that they can teach us other habits, some good and some bad. For example, Apple computer donated thousands of PCs to schools and during my career in the computer biz I found that this exposure led most of them to insist that Apple was the ONLY choice in computers, while their parents were more open to other options. So, I wondering if there is any example of your conditioning that you are aware of that began in childhood. For example, did your proclivity for military service begin with "playing war"?

Pretended to smoke/ate candy cigarettes to mimic my mom and dad who both smoked. In 2d grade snuck a few out of a pack and smoked one. They tasted so bad, that I never tried one again in my life. I'd still eat a candy cigarette though, if they still made them.

Letting a child smoke a cigarette may be the best deterrent of them all. Simply forbidding them gives them the allure of "forbidden fruit"

Ate candy cigarettes as a kid all the time, CPT Jack Durish, but I've never had a real cigarette in my mouth. When the MCIs (commonly known as C-rations) came with cigarettes, I would trade them for the meat or fruit units to the smokers. I was golden!

You're lucky you never tried to smoke a cigarette from C-Rats. They were so dry they burned better than fuses

I did eat a few candy cigarettes but never smoked them. I did try it a couple of times but didn't enjoy it. I did however smoke those little cigars black & mild and gold & mild. I also smoked weed a few times! :)
