Here's the background. You are an experienced Soldier. You walk in to the commissary to see a young 2LT shopping with a headset on. You professionally and politely get the 2LT’s attention and address the deficiency. They blatantly are rude, dismiss your comment, and tell you that those rules do not apply to him as an officer. Whether you are an Officer or Enlisted, how do you react?

As a senior NCO I would be polite and respectful. E.g. Excuse me Lt xx. What organization are from and who is your supervisor. If I do get this information I would inform that would contact his commander. And--I would.

Call his boss the next day at work and relay the discussion. I had this happen when a Captain was browbeating one of my young troops at Mt. Home. He actually brought her to tears when I stepped in a asked the young gentleman into my office. Then I told him he either goes back out and apologizes and behaves himself, or I hop in my car and go see the OG CC and lay it all out for him to handle. The Captain apologized. Nuff said

Headsets are a problem. Personally, I have people walk in front of my car daily and they are too interested in following a phone. I actually saw Major walk by a Light Colonel, and neither realized nor were salutes rendered... they were too busy following their phones.

Personally had an occasion to quietly advise a 1st lieutenant that his hair was not regulation and should find time to visit the barber. He did not take that well and began to berate me. I respectfully reminded him that he as was I representatives of our unit and if he felt that I was out of line that I would gladly apologize in front of the commander of our battalion

I would tell them if they don't do as you ask (within reason) they will deal with my higher ranking officer

Had a new 2LT lock my heels and read me the riot act once. Uniform was not neat and very clean, boots had not been shined in weeks, (polish put on but not shined) and I and the two Pvt's with me did not salute him when he came out of Bn HQ. Tried to tell him that we had just come in with a convoy, We seldom shined boots or buckles and we never saluted. Before I could explain why to him he ripped me up. All my deficiencies as an NCO plus I was driving a jeep with Snoopy in a champagne glass on the hood of my jeep. About then Capt. Mac came out of HQ, told us to grab our weapons and saddle up. The Lt then told Capt. Mac he wanted to report us for disrespect . When he told the Capt. what happen I had to keep my mouth shut and just grin. He learned what a ass chewing really was. In Soc Trang there were snipers and saluting an officer could get him shot. If you did it was an article 15 offense. He liked Snoopy on His jeep. And the red dust on our uniforms was part of the country. In monsoon season it would have been mud. He was assigned to our company and arrived a week later. He never corrected another NCO again. Our Top explained to him that we were going to make his life a lot easier or ruin it. Plus Capt. Mac had been a E7 once. He turned out to be a pretty good Lt. He knew his stuff but he was just young and self important when he got to Nam.

I was an O2 in the Army National Guard. I was taught to respect the enlisted leadership and to take care of my men. Had I accidentally missed this salute I would have apologized-but I made sure I never did.

Well if you're in the commissary, there's gonna be a motard close by. Look for all the black on the color (Marines) take a step back and watch how beautiful it is
