I don't know anything about the Army. From what I understand grunts earn this cord for completing infantry training but depending on what type of unit they are with, they may or may not be authorized to wear it. In the Corps, if you earn something, jump wings for instance, you get to keep wearing them even if you go to a non jumping unit.

The Infantry cord and, for enlisted Soldiers, disks are worn by Infantry Soldiers serving in an Infantry slot. If a Soldier with an Infantry primary MOS is assigned to a position that does not carry an Infantry MOS the disks and cord are not worn. There are(or were, at least) exceptions, recruiters and ROTC instructors come to mind.

Cpl (Join to see) - Yes, the blue backer disks for the US and Crossed Rifles. If you are no longer an Infantryman currently assigned to an Infantry unit you do not wear it. If you earn a Combat Infantry Badge or Expert Infantry Badge, you may wear them, but not the cord and disks if no longer in the Infantry. That's the case for me, I was Infantry, now I'm a Reserve truck driver, and can no longer wear the blue cord with my dress uniform.

How does that work exactly? Barring going to the drill field, MSG duty, or recruiting as a "B" billet, there has to be a billet open in your MOS that needs filling for you to get sent there. I imagine the Guard and Reserves are somewhat different.
