This study and others like it are suppressed by those who have a vested interest in the popular narrative wherein guns and gun owners are inherently evil. Even the Pope has gotten in on the act: No gun owner can be a Christian and those who manufacture guns are among the most evil. Data that contradicts the narrative is dismissed as heresy and those who utter it blasphemers. I wouldn't worry about it overmuch. I keep in mind that those who would disarm us have already disarmed themselves. They have neither knowledge or weapons to fight us. Ain't it grand?

The irony here is that local County Sheriffs across all states that have "open carry" laws are encouraging the populace to WEAR their handguns in the open.
I love data and that's data I can get behind. We have our CCW's but I can get to my .45 G.A.P. Glock faster if it is NOT buried beneath a coat.

Headed out to practice now but today is shotguns.
Thanks Sir,
Rick

There is no such thing as "gun violence". What we are really talking is criminal violence. NO statistic shows that the mere presence of guns causes higher crime rates. Quite the opposite. The statistics bear it out, and I have seen it myself.

This is great historical data for those interested in knowing what is actually happening which excludes most in the media.

One trend I have been reading about lately is that while crime and gun crimes are down overall, there is large increase in many larger cities such as Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore, LA and a few others. If you adjust for those it is much lower still.

Cpl Jeff N. Just a few things I remember from a basic policing class. The denser the population the higher the crime rate, per capita. Whenever economies take a down turn people move to urban areas. So crime rates go up even more just based off a denser population.

SGT William Howell I've been doing A LOT of research recently. It looks like 5k/sqmile is the "magic number" where things seem to go nuts. If you remove areas (not even cities) with that density, you can see violent crime plummet.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS . How about class? If you look at the upper east side/west side in Manhattan for example. Pretty dense, my guess is the population that lives there is not committing the crimes. I suspect if you roll some sort of economic element (annual income for example) that might refine the number of population centers down a bit.

Cpl Jeff N. There are absolutely Socio-Economic factors. No doubt. Population density seems to be one of the major "triggers" if that makes sense though. Poor is bad, but poor + High Pop = Catastrophic.

Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS - Did those data applied to Chicago, DC, New Orleans? and one more too ... I forget its name. but supposedly, those four city homicides make the super majority of the homicides numbers.

I do like data and other information because I love to conduct research Sgt Aaron Kennedy, MS. Thank you for sharing the article while indicated Gun homicide rate is down 49% since the 1993 peak.
I was interested to see if the Pew researchers would attempt to posit cause and effect.
"Researchers have studied the decline in firearm crime and violent crime for many years, and though there are theories to explain the decline, there is no consensus among those who study the issue as to why it happened.
There also is debate about the extent of gun ownership in the U.S., although no disagreement that the U.S. has more civilian firearms, both total and per capita, than other nations. Compared with other developed nations, the U.S. has a higher homicide rate and higher rates of gun ownership, but not higher rates for all other crimes."

statistics also show that cities and states where there is the strictest gun laws also have higher crime rates and those with the least gun control have the lowest rates. the 4 cities you state have high crime rates also have the strictest gun laws. and it has been shown in more than one study by more then one research group.

Take the guns out of the equation and there are still mass killings:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Kunming_attack
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lone_Star_College%E2%80%93CyFair

The list goes on... I remember someone walking through a concert randomly stabbing people back in the 1980's.

Point is crazy people are going to do crazy things... I'd rather equip sane and trained people to stop the crazy.
