The bill introduced by Westfield state Rep. John Velis, a U.S. Army Reserves captain who served in Afghanistan, would make such misrepresentations punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
"When you're doing it for financial gain, whether it's a veteran's discount at a store or a special rate on a loan, that should be a crime," Velis said.
The bill -- one of the strongest versions of the federal c in the nation -- is gaining the support of local veterans, who say it addresses a growing problem documented in YouTube videos of veterans outing wannabes seeking discounts and attention.

I don't think it should be a crime. I think public shaming is absolutely effective as a punishment.
If we have to criminalize this behavior, I vote to bring back stocks in the public square and bring a couple bushels of old tomatoes to the nearest VFW.

Typically its a crime when they do it to defraud. There is one thing when you run into the old codger in the countryside watering hole who singlehandedly battled 100 NVA regulars, got bayonetted five times, captured and escaped and figured out how to fly a Mig 15 and flew it back to friendly territory. There is the other where the guy who never served or was a cook or clerk telling some vulnerable woman about his combat experiences where he was ordered to shoot a school bus full of kids and has a lifelong TBI and PTSD. That guy manages to get that woman to help him with thousands of dollars, squats at her house and takes advantage. That clearly should be a crime.

Ah yes, MSgt Soup Sandwich, his service record is long and distinguished, part of the illustrious Air Force Airborne-Scuba-Infantry Wing. The best part is if you see the other pictures he's wearing the dress blue pants bloused into desert boots.

You know, I have to chuckle looking at him uniform... I mean at the very least, research what you are putting on it for crying out loud!!! I actually put together Military uniforms for a living and know all the branch regs more than I would like to. But what it really all boils down to is integrity and respect for the uniform and the people who wear it. Which apparently this guy does not have...

If I recall this guy was actually showing up to his brother's basic training graduation and he got arrested coming through the gate wearing that.

If I'm not mistaken, this guy had some very serious mental health issues. Obviously, no one who is reasoning clearly would do that, but he was really screwed up. I hope he got the help he needed.

Sounds like a year of free chow and medical care. If I were an already overtaxed Massachusetts taxpayer, I'd be outraged.

The sad part is that is entirely possible. If he is delusional and thinks he is Audie Murphy or someone else he maybe ion the DMH system soon, especially if he is resisting arrest and ordered there for evaluation.

I apologize to my Brothers and Sisters. Ecp. combat vets. But when i saw the photo for this article, I laughed. I'm still smiling! Wow, what a career this kid has had ah ha ha ha. Hey, you've been really, REALLY busy! And the EXPRESSION on his face is priceless. He never have served a day, but I have a feeling this is one full-bird sergeant who's going to have him some PTS. Dear God, look at him! I think hes been shot a total of 197 times

The REAL question is WHO IN THE HELL invests this much time into doing this? I just don't get it, if they want to be military so badly, why not just join up and be like the rest of us? I still don't understand why people outside of the Military feels like we are so entitled...

If I recall reading about him a decade ago, he did enlist in the Air Force but was discharged after a few years. I forget if it was criminal or for some other reason. I think he was like a logistics troop, or something like that. Clearly, he wasn't a whatever this is though. The funny thing is I think he was actually wearing this at his brother's basic training graduation when he got arrested by the base police and they made him strip all of it off and he was escorted off base.
