Which is worse? Someone wearing something they did not earn or wearing a uniform they never were allowed to wear?

That is really a tough call, but I am going to say that stolen valor from someone who has already served/is serving is worse for the following reasons: 1. They should know better, 2. they will actually know how the uniform is supposed to look so they are more likely to get away with it. Neither is okay though, really this poll is like comparing a punch in the face to a kick in the shin haha.

One can rationalize a decision all day long but at the end of the day wrong is wrong no matter how you present it. I think the same thought could best be applied here with one exception, an active member or veteran would be breaking an honor code that is shared among the ranks. The old line "You should know better" comes to mind. For whatever reason people do it, it's nothing more than a need for attention, blatant disrespect for the men and women who have earned the right to wear the uniform, and a poor reflection of themselves. I believe that they must be called out for their actions but in the same breath we should pity these people. They must be in a very low and sinister place to present themselves as frauds.

Makes you wonder why they do it. And even if you were to do it, why not do it better so it is less obvious. Our regulations and pictures are out there to see what right wear looks like. Yet you get these people wearing medals on combat uniforms and wearing badges in wrong spot. I never support them wearing uniforms and I wish the Stolen War Act was not ruled unconstitutional so we could punish these folks.

I can only add to an experience, I saw a new marine with a combat action ribbon for Iraq thing, it was the only ribbon, he had just previously graduated from his "a" school, it might have been 03, and I asked him about it, He replied my unit is serving there, he got a ribbon for joining a unit. don't know what to make of that

In the Marine Corps you have to be there to get the ribbon.

Sir, I would have to go with someone wearing something that their did not earn. A service member or veteran making a conscious decision to wear a tab, award, etc. that they did not earn is very disparaging. A person like that severely lacks integrity. While someone who puts on a uniform who has never served is also seriously in the wrong, especially if they are seeking personal gain, the service member or veteran who does it is far worse in my opinion.

Ironically there was an instance such as that not too long ago within the unit. The Soldier was referred for UCMJ and the CDR found the Soldier guilty. This Soldier will be more than likely find himself on the next QMP list. I won't go into anymore details because I would not want anyone from the unit try to drill down to try to determine who the Soldier is.

MSG Stankovich and CPT Maurelli,

I don't know if the soldier is worse but I voted that way strictly because they know better. However, I think a civilian has a psychological issues that they need to address, I know this might not be the popular opinion, but I don't think they should get jail time for stolen valor. I say this because congress has done a lot worse to veterans then any guy that wears a uniform to gain a free meal. I don't want to take away from the argument, but community service at a Veteran Service Organization should be the remedy for these douche bags that wear a uniform knowing they never served.
