I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

I say I would do it all again. I responded that way to some folks over the Veterans Day weekend and they told me that was the best response they had heard.

"Thank you for your support" is a good answer. Hadn't thought of that response.
"My pleasure" or "it was an honor to serve", sometimes surprises people especially if they are being solicitous and feel obligated to comment.
Have just now read comments. Many I would not feel uncomfortable saying in response.

My responses Is Thankyou. Keep in mind that 50 years ago when I returned State Side we were spat on and call baby killers.

I puzzled over how I should respond to this for a long time. In my "era" the options were: go to collage - get drafted - enlist - or head to the Great White North. Since Canada was much too cold for me, I had no desire to continue going to school, and I did not want to be drafted - I enlisted. I felt that my service was not an option so I was conflicted about my response. I have since settled on, "Thank you, it was an honor to serve."

I respond: As a Veteran, I thank you for being someone worth serving for (if they seem worthy of the response). I may then add: and I would gladly serve again, but not under the command of the current President.
