I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

Thank you for your support. Also, if they served in the military or some other service-oriented position such as first responder, I thank them for their service to the community.

A young woman thanked me for my service and I said, “I did it for you,” which is completely true.

I just say thank you and that I really didn’t do much.

I tell them thanks for paying your taxes. If they are the right age group I tell them we are hiring. If I suspect there is a twinge of guilt ill ask “How about you? Army?” its been fifty plus years of all volunteer and I came onboard just about day one. So tread lightly because you are really telling me thanks for carrying my load.

I respond by telling them that I didn't spend 20 years in the military to be thanked for my service. I hate that some people thrive on being praised for doing what I consider their duty to this country.

For anyone OK to wear their heart on your sleeve, I answer “you were worth it”. I was given this response by a Vietnam veteran and it punched me in the heart. After hearing this response for the first time I met a young Army Ranger who was injured in Iraq. When he thanked me for my service I told him that “he was worth it”. He, very wide eyed asked me why I would say that as we just met. I explained that everyone who benefits from the freedom “WE” provide by our service are worth it. We ended up talking for almost a hour. That is all. Stay safe.
