How do you respond when someone says "Thank you for your service"?

I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

I don't say anything because everyone usually thanks my husband for his service.

As a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, this question makes me extremely uncomfortable. I find it very shallow and condescending. I feel very undeserving of the sentiment. I unusually say "Thank you" and deflect to a new subject.

Nobody seemed to care about my time in service, until the Public Relations campaign as a response to the World Trade Center being demolished. The justification in creating The Department of Homeland Security, the the beginning of Operations Iraqi Freedom, and sending our troops into Afghanistan. That is when the saying "Thank you for your service..." was encultured into the American psyche. Prior t that. Operation Desert Storm was a completely forgotten event. I can't claim to have earned any Valor in my tern of service. And I just don't feel comfortable or justified with strangers painting me with their "Thoughts and Prayers" of the Valor that they think I have. No. Just no, please. I claim nothing. I ask for nothing. I completed my term in service for my own reasons, and moved on. My rank has never been my identity. Please give your "Thank you for your service..." who have a claim to Valor. I humbly and respectfully decline the sentiment.
