I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

That was a tough one for me as well being stationed in Washington DC for almost 6 years.
“Thank you for your service” was always responded with a
“Thank you for your support!”
And that covered so much and was short and sweet!

I am a Vietnam Veteran and it I believe is even more awkward for us. We were not recognized. Our wear to many was a war that should be forgotten. I think it should burn in all their offing minds for the rest of their lives. I can't and will not forgive America for our treatment. When someone thanks me for my service, I look at the person. If they are older I can tell their sincerity or regret in having to say Welcome Home.
Sorry but there are definitely some who are sincere, but most it's just a recording talking to me.

I heard another VET reply to this comment with the best response. “You are Worth It “
Now whenever I am told “thank you for your service “ I reply “you are worth it “ I love the reaction that I get by saying this.
I used to use the standard “your welcome “ but telling them that they are worth it gets a strange look and then it changes into something else that means more to me than the standard look. Try it and you’ll see what I mean.

I just thank them. I know some people get all knotted up about it and feel that it's not sincere, and sometimes it's not, but for those who mean it it's worth being nice and genuinely thanking them.
