The USN/USMC/USAF retire their aircraft and sends them to Davis-Montham, AFB for storage and use later. Why can't the Army do the same?

I posted a question today on putting our Kiowas and Harriers up to Foreign Military Sales (FMS) for use by our allies and friends to use to keep an eye on China. The Navy puts their ASW/Refueller S-3 Vikings in storage and takes 2 squadrons of early model FA-18 jet fighters out of storage and upgrades them to a FA-18C+ model. The Army, sadly, is going to shred the OH-58. Why do that? It is wrong.

Yes since my buddy and I were thinking our poor allies and friends in SE Asia may be able to use this on their LHA or on land to keep eyes on the Chinese or Phillipine insurgents. I don't think they should be scrapped. I think its fishy.

It's our tax dollars being shredded, if we can re-sell those birds and make back some of what has been spent over their lifetimes, we should.

They've actually sent the majority to AMARG for exactly what you are talking about. I get the monthly report from 309th and there's over two pages worth of 58's there right now

It will be a combination of local sale to various organizations both law enforcement and civil use, as well as foreign military sales (Tawian, Turkey, and Croatia for example). The birds that cannot be sold due to maintenance or other issues will be turned into Museum pieces, range fodder, or shredded
As far as the UH-1s, AMARG currently has 49 UH-1N/V/P

SFC (Join to see) - Who can I put county logistics officers in touch re the 49 UH-1N/V/P's . . . how many do you believe are intact enough and have low enough hours to be economically useful as substitutes for county fire / search and rescue / law enforcement? Who to contact re contracts, costs, etc? What about parts supply? Sandy
p.s. One of the advantages of sale to local government is they fly under different rules from general aviation . . . equipment not ordinarily certified is useful in their operations.

The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Tuscon Arizona. I wouldn't know specifically who to talk to, but that's where they are

Here's two different articles that are from military Aviation magazines that I read

LTC (Join to see) I think we should keep the OH-58 Kiowa's which are in great maintenance condition and dispose of those which are not unless the maintenance requirements are cost efficient for helicopters in mid-to-long term storage. If nothing else some of these birds could be used for anti-aircraft system range practice as they are slung well below aircraft.
