Don't worry, the next generation just behind me won't be motivated to stay in any amount of time based on "retirement pay".They will bail long before that.

not that I think it's possible, but get rid of the "good old boy" system. I spent 11 years in the NG and lost count of the number of good Soldiers that got out because they got tired of getting screwed over for promotion, awards, assignments, etc because it went to someone else whose daddy, uncle, cousin, whatever was a retired GO or other high up in the guard.

I personally know a guy (I took over his command) who was relieved for cause in theater. Left his M9 in the shitter and didn't report it missing for 3 days, was caught on video in compromising positions with female E3s and E4s, etc. Got sent home and nothing happened to him at all, in fact he got promoted 6 months later. his daddy was a retired GO and buddies with the TAG so the whole thing got swept under the rug.

And soldiers freak out that congress wants to take away certain judiciary powers of UCMJ. What you saw was exactly why it should.

Gen. David Berger said "When we fail to hold the standard, we establish new lower standards. Elite organizations do not accept mediocrity and they do not look the other way when teammates come up short of expectations. We must hold each other accountable." The “E4 Mafia” is a mentality that spreads far beyond the sham shield. There are far too many in leadership that coddle their favorites and excuse those with less than desirable performance. Accountability is key.

One thing that frustrates me is that I can’t hold one anyone accountable. They see their friends from other sections not be held to the same standard and the bureaucracy of everything...it’s frustrating

SFC Luke Anderson from a leadership perspective outside the military I completely understand your frustrations. When leadership teams are not on the same playing field you will be constantly undermined and will lose the respect of your peers and subordinates. “The culture of any organization is shaped by the worst behavior the leaders are willing to tolerate”.
There are so many people wanting the power and privilege of leadership but few are willing to pay the cost of that obligation. I would highly recommend reading the book “How successful people lead” by John C Maxwell.

It has helped me greatly see where I am in different situations with different groups of people.

If you can’t or are not allowed to hold people in your unit accountable than remember, people will ALWAYS live up or down to the expectation you have of them. Speak softly, act loudly, counsel with compassion but demand excellence.

“Good enough” is never good enough! It’s just an excuse to quit trying.
