PO1 as you know, I am the rare example, infact the only example, (until I meet another on this web site or somewhere else) the only sailor I have ever met "ME", a SAM Sea Air Mariner enlistment package, NPS Navy 18 SELRES UIC Unit Identification Code Guided Missile Frigates COPELAND and SIDES. Fully underway watch qualified Damage Control Etc etc etc. My Study found downloadable 1975 DOD Reserve Manpower Navy Reports first ever QUOTE """TEST""" Combat Ships Manning Concept mix 30/70 or 70/30 reserve/active compared the normal 100% These unique "TEST" Combat Ships were operating under the command of whatever Destroyer Sqaudron (in my case DESRON 1) and not to the Reserve Side. These unique "TEST" combat ships started with a few DD's 1975, replaced by a few FF's, replaced by the FFGs. The NRF FFG's were infact 70% Active Manned ""Skeleton Crew"" and guess what for shit sake still required full operational deployment qualified. Find a few NRF Naval Reserve Force FFG Active Sailors. More than a few will say it was crap. Less Sailors Same Qualification Load to compare to the efficiency of the full manned Active FFG. NRF FFG Full Time Crew=Less Duty Sections More Duty Days plus the amazing additional advantage of monthly deployment with this small crew of Part Time Sailors that are assigned the ship. I think it sounds like more of an experiment to see how much you can get for how little, with the goal that is being testing saving some money on a smaller crews smaller compensation.

Other than a tour of a retired vessel, can't say I have. I always thought it would be cool to go out to see on a ship, but never had the opportunity. I guess the Army doesn't have much need for that.

I've been aboard the USS Wisconsin down in Norfolk and back in the 70's was given a tour of the USS Threadfin before it was transferred to the Turkish Navy (who sunk it by accident).
