For all of you who have already made the transition out of the military - what would you would have found most beneficial as your days in service were drawing to an end? Was the TAP program useful? What would you have found helpful even after you had gotten out? And if you still struggle, what do you think would help you now? If you don't want to answer for everyone to see, would you mind sending me an email on here? I'd love to hear from you!!

i was lucky enough to be able to attend TAP twice. at my 1 year mark, then again when i was 3 months out. TAP bombards you with so much excellent information, the second time i was able to pick up on some of the things i didn't the first time. i was also able to network and got a job offer before i even retired! i still get to work with military members every day, and if they are nearing the end of their military career, i tell them to start networking! and start on those resumes! another thing many service members are STILL not aware of is the VMET document that should have details of ALL their military training and schools (GREAT for starting a resume!)

Spending an entire week learning how to transfer your military skills into civilian seemed way too long. Time would be better spent learning about the various programs available to vets (nationally and locally) when they get out. I didn’t learn most of that until I started working in Social work. Having a real talk about the difficulties of transition in these days, where isolation and alienation are common. Being a veteran it can be hard to find friends when most of the civilian world is underinformed about what goes on in the military and the fact that we are fighting in at least 7 countries. Clear, relevant information that can help people when they get out. Also Veteran owner businesses and ways to find them wherever you move to.

SN Keagan Miller I couldn't have said it better myself! I had no clue either until I started in the field of SW.... it's a shame really... I know that the system is trying to make changes but there are so many things that the system doesn't offer assistance with... I'm hoping to come up with a proposal to change that!

SGT Jennifer Rixe When I was discharged in June 1972, I had a good plan to find a job and start college, and then start my dream job when I graduated. I was concerned that being away from classes so long, that I would be rusty. I found a good paying operator job at a chemical company, and started college. Many of the students were in college to party and some students had no love for the military or veterans. Between work and school, I kept very busy, which left little time to dwell on negative things, and helped with the transition. I found that I enjoyed college classes, and went on to obtain my degree and had a successful career. Having a plan, setting goals, and staying busy was what worked for me. Major change can be both scary and exciting at the same time.

Sgt (Join to see) I see not much has changed since '72... it was a rough start for me when I got out and started going to school.... Thankfully I met a few vets along the way and have been rockin pretty steady since! I totally agree, change can be terrifying but soooo needed!! I fell in love with my learning side and plan on keeping that love alive! This experience has definitely changed me for the better. Thank you for your view!
