North Korea apparently issued an ultimatum for South Korea to shut down the DMZ speaker system by 5pm Saturday or "else".

Considering the psycho we're are dealing with, it's probably a good idea as not to give him an excuse/reason for a confrontation. If he got it during an exercise, North propaganda would dictate that aggressive action were taken for invasion in the guise of an exercise, and would indicate we/South started it as the perfect excuse to invade. Any exercise at this point would be a great opportunity for this and possibly futile. Lets wait for them to f-up and take care of their asses once and for all...

eh... I understand where you're coming from and I agree they might do that.
The problem is this is an exercise that has been the same for over 3 years (longer with very minor changes) and the date was even set for it a year ago. It's computer based and doesn't really involve troop movements. There's no reason NK would actually see it as a threat.
Further, I've been to that exercise and it's not about an offensive against NK...

MSgt Curtis Ellis, great point, but I agree with LCDR (Join to see), this is nothing new and doesnt pose any threat to Kim or his part of the country. I dont know why he is acting extra paranoid all of a sudden. I just hope he doesnt make any craxy decisions in the near future, well crazier than normal.

LCDR (Join to see) CW4 (Join to see) - Yes Sir, but it's also for that very reason, among others, I see that it would be a perfect opportunity to "invade under the auspices of an exercise they have all the time, at the same time, every year, for the past umpteen years... Except for this time cause we were not expecting it..." I'm not saying that it makes sense, I'm just saying look at who we are dealing with, who their allies are... and what those allies would be willing to accept/believe from them vs the obvious...

MSgt Curtis Ellis I definitely understand where you're coming from and do agree. I'm just saying it wouldn't make sense to me, not that it doesn't to the peerless leader in North Korea.

Well all my infantry brothers lets pack our cold weather gear up, grab our rifles and sit by the flight line... there's a new BIG WAR brewing.

I really wish we hadn't stopped the exercise. Apparently things there seem more serious than we had thought.
The problem is that if they aren't, we just let North Korea win that battle. And unfortunately every small win for them they view as enormous.

LCDR (Join to see), I agree Sir. Perception speaks volumes. North Korea will use any and all propaganda and actions to their advantage even if it's truly not as serious as it may seem.

Reports of the end of the exercise are apparently premature.

SGT Jeremiah B. I am actually very impressed by this. It was a needed move IMNSHO.

I think it's an interesting time in the history of not only the relationship between the US and the peninsula. How prepared are we for major combat operations in the area? I would say we are modernly prepared.

SN Greg Wright you're right about China. My hope is that they don't see a benefit to keeping North Korea around. South Korea trades with China as much (more probably) than North Korea and is probably a significantly better partner.
The fact that NK hasn't listened to any of China's advise recently also doesn't help them.

LCDR (Join to see) - You make good points. Here's to hoping we don't have to find out.

LCDR (Join to see) - Occasionally, you have to let your little cousin fight his own fight.I agree that China may have their belly full of N.K. The one thing we don`t need is another political war. Hit them fast and hard, with no time to think.Negotation are killing our troops.

I was dumbfounded when I read that. I personally took part in that joint SK, US and UN exercise twice. It truly serves a couple purposes, show of strength and show of readiness. Also would show the little fat boy he needs to be careful how far he pushes. We have the ability to take his ass out and he knows it.
