I want to believe the advertisement and take them for an honest organization putting faith in their word, but at the same time - I know it's probably the opposite at worst and maybe some vets get hired at best. I'm in the process again of job searching now that I'm retiring and I have gotten the, "something on my forehead," look quite a bit.

In addition to the civilian companies that claim to be vet friendly, I've also had negative experience with contractor companies that claim to be "disabled veteran owned" and friendly towards vets, but even if they do hire, they tend to look negatively on employees that need time away from work to fulfill military obligations(Guard/Reserve)....

This was the attitude of my last place of employment, We support Veteran's, when there was a Veteran App. Day, it was don't push it and Vet id wasn't the proper form. When I had a back-to-back deployment I was told that I was gone to long and I really couldn't come back to work. When it came time for advancements it was put out that veterans will be given first choice, when I applied I was told that they really needed someone who wasn't in the military and for the fact I deployed wasn't in the best interest in the company. One my last deployment I was told that I could only come back as a new hire and my DD214 was not the correct form (so I brought in other 214's, which was the same form), but the format of the DD214 was not correct. Then I was questioned about drill weekends, this unit here isn't drilling this weekend why do you have to go to this city for drill. then I was informed that it was either the guard or work for the company and I couldn't do both. When I was terminated it was sorry but you should have came home in a box!
When I have applied to places that claim to be Veteran friendly, and I state that I can save them in taxes by hiring me, I'm told that we can hire a couple of illegals and save more.
Personally I feel if a business states it Veteran friendly, its all a public relation deal to make them look good.

My initial reaction to something so vague is not about what the statement means to me--it means nothing--rather, "what does 'veteran friendly' mean to YOU"?

Agreed SGT Dave Tracy That statement has no impact on my decision to apply or not, or to support them or not. What does have impact is what they do with that statement. There was a Burger King next to base that had We support our troops signs all over it, but did not even offer the military discount that all other Bk's in the area did. So no support for them. I was at a local restaurant that was advertising a Veterans Appreciation Day. We overheard a waiter ask why so many mooches would show up for a free meal. All of us got up and left, I have never been back. What it means to the company is the only way this statement has impact. JMHO

Walmart for one has a specific graphic of a Captain leaving the service to manage a store, yet I was told from the HR reps during the interview that they specifically hire from within. Also, that I was overqualified for the Assistant Store Manager training program (quote - "There is no place for me to put you that you won't overshadow the current manager".) but not qualified (no retail background) to enter as a Store Manager. That's a neato place to be... Why the add campaign and commercial? Awesome - if I want to go from Company Command to stocking shelves and I "prove" myself I may someday be an Assistant Store Manager in Training! Where do I sign up for that? Please, these companies just say that stuff to check the block.

I suppose if I wanted to drive a truck or sell insurance I'd be all set - that's all I see out there. Major, Sergeant Major or Private, most people don't even know the difference, nor do they care to learn.

Thanks for the insight Randy. I've seen and heard some instances which parallel with your experience. This type of situation makes the community ask "What does this company actually think Veteran Friendly means?". On the other side of the conversation, if the veteran community feels the term "Veteran Friendly" is FAKE then companies who are actually hiring veterans and using the moniker will get unfairly categorized in the group as well.

This has vexed me personally for a while, we are constantly tole how our "professionalism" and "leadership" skills are in demand - yet after we spend 25+ years doing what we do we are told we lack the 3 years of industry specific experience or our degree is in the wrong subject. Seriously, my degree is from 20 years ago even if it were in the field the information I learned would be so dated it is irrelevant. I think the people on the boards of these companies want to give veterans a shot it just doesn't get translated to the 30 something HR person who simply looks for the check-marks in the list of job requirements. Have to think outside the box and see how the military fits into the position. They either don't care to learn or won't...

Don't know is this is for the OP or for me, but its in response to my post so here goes... The problem, we can "civilianize" our resumes and job titles all we want, have quantifiable bullets and monumental achievments under that position yet all the employer really sees is that you were in the military. Take the same job title, same bullets and change who you worked for to another civilian company and the world opens up before you. For instance I say I was the VP of Regional Recruiting for a major company (US Army BN XO), I managed a staff of 75 people, 400 vehicles, 57 facilities achieved great benchmarks, managed huge budgets etc. All they really see is - ah, employer "US Army", in their uninformed heads they don't see that as experience they see it as military and irrelevant at best. Fair treatment would be to accept that the military doesn't make anything, we don't have profit and loss its not directly translatable but the theories of management are the same. I've heard "you need to learn the corporate culture" more than one time. Really, DOD is a corporate culture and if say I went from IBM to Apple from MID to MID level I'd have to learn the way they did things specifically just like I would after military service... I gurantee they don't tell a person who was a mid-senior level manger at a similar but not exact industry "yeah, I appreciate you were fairly senior there but we need you to start at entry level here and - well, you are overqualified for that so thanks..." They just don't comprehend that there are various levels of management in the military. They don't know the difference between a Private and a Colonel.

Personally I have not had any luck with companies claiming to be hiring veterans or calling themselves veteran friendly.
Even at USAJOBS I have been snubbed for being hired, and yes I have sought the assistance of the Wounded Warrior hiring "professionals" with both Naval Air and Naval Surface offices. Almost 1 year now and all I get are out of office replies when asking for updates, I call their phone and leave a message only to never be responded to.
Using veteran status and disability of 30% or more preference and still not being hired or even called for an interview.
I used a professional resume writing service that is provided by Career Builder offered to DeVry Alumni, I graduated April 2014.
I am not sure where to turn to because when I tried to talk to the VA Counselors where I live all they do is tell me to fix my resume.
I have little to no faith in the veteran friendly companies.

Chad, where do I send it? I really am getting sick of all these alleged agencies that claim to help veterans.
I sent an email question to Wounded Warrior Project, of which I am a member, and they sent me back an automated response telling me how to join WWP, I mean WTF is that.
I also contacted USAJOBS and they said that they only post the jobs and have nothing to do with hiring agencies. They did refer me to some other site about veterans and they just refer you back to USAJOBS.
Sorry to rant, I'm just fed up with this whole thing about companies alleged valuing veterans and I'm really sick of hearing "thank you for your service".

I have yet to receive an interview from a company that is stating "we hire veterans". If you do not already have the specific jobs skills certification for the position they are hiring for, they don't want you.
Majority of the companies use "we hire veterans" very loosely.

Yep, you managed a battalion, that's nice what is that anyway? We need someone with 3 years in a manufacturing environment. Buzzz thanks for playing. Throw that one on the pile with the others..

Not sure I believe it. Went to a military styled jobs fair a while back. If Inwas a truck driver or heavy equipment operator I probably would have had a job regardless of my veterans status. I have an IT degree and the one firm that had IT related jobs stressed the importance of applying through their veteran portal. They also said that their veterans advisor would personally contact me before the close of business that day. Never heard from them again. The firm was US Bank.

The CEO of Starbucks made news a few months back about his plan to hire a large amount of veterans to fill mich needed positions in the company. Had an active application for an IT job there as well. Shortly after the announcement, I received a rejection email. From what I can
tell Stsrbucks either wants veterans for Baristas or potential store owners.

It means they've got a good HR person who will interview veteran's and bring us in at the lowest possible rate and have higher expectations for us than any of their other employees.
