That's stupid. It's worth noting though that the vet was shot with his own gun. Don't draw a weapon you don't intend to use.

Yeah, that was a bit of a bad story for a Marine. All kinds of jokes could follow here but I won't do that in reverence to my bothers and sisters

SSG Izzy Abbass - Nah, I totally understand his position. He'd hoped it would scare the guy off, but at the end of the day, killing a drunk idiot over sea turtles isn't probably something that would sit well with him. I know I wouldn't want to be that guy either.

SGT Jeremiah B., agreed; a gun makes a terrible threat. Nobody can outrun a bullet and their only choice is to attack immediately. This is what appears to have happened here. When he pulled the gun he should have been prepared to use it quickly.
That said, it is difficult to know which alternative would have been worse - getting shot in the butt or explaining to the police why you shot a drunk.

Well, if you draw a weapon you are supposed to draw it to use it. If he had a conceal carry permit in FL (which I suspect he did) he should know that he drew his weapon, likely, unlawfully.
I did not glean from the article that his life or others were in imminent danger from this guy. You don't draw your weapon to scare people or show them you are armed, you draw it to shoot for this very reason. It was wrestled away and used on him. You have to know your limitations, the law and act accordingly. He did not.
