Vladimir Putin: Trading Sanctions For Syria?

RP Members here is some great copy and paste for your morning reading!

What Does Putin Really Want?

“He has multiple goals,” says Baunov. “He can show the Russian population that Russia is an historic power and still important. He sent his troops beyond the neighborhood (Ukraine being a part of the “neighborhood”) where the US and the West were active without asking their permission. That’s a signal to the population that Russia is great again.”

“In Vladimir Putin we have a very strong leader,” a knowledgeable observer tells me over the weekend in at a café in Moscow, “but not the country to back it up.” He is referring of course to Russia’s current dismal economic outlook given sanctions over Putin’s actions in Ukraine and his propensity to not cede any economic power to anyone lacking in fealty to the Kremlin.

Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, U.S. President Barack Obama, right, talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, prior to a session of the G-20 Summit in Antalya, Turkey. The tide of global rage against the Islamic State group lends greater urgency to ending the jihadis’ ability to operate at will from a base in war-torn Syria. That momentum could also force a reevaluation of what to do about President Bashar Assad’s future and puts a renewed focus on the position of his key patrons, Russia and Iran.

Putin would love for Europe to lift sanctions imposed after the annexation of Crimea in exchange for something he is already doing.
Only a fool would give it to him.
Operations in Ukraine continue unabated. It was only a year ago that Russian-backed separatists (or frontline Russian units, depending on who you believe) shot down a Malaysian Airlines commercial jet, and we are to feel sorry for them and let bygones be bygones because ISIS blew up a Russian airliner over the Sinai?
I think not.
They have their interests, and we have ours. They only coincide in part in regards to Syria. That doesn't make us allies.

Whatever Putin's motives, one can be certain that he will always be several moves ahead of Obama.

Putin is like the player at the poker table with a short stack of chips. Every time you begin to think he's playing his cards well you have to stop an think, "Yeah, but how did he lose all his chips if he's really that good?"
