While watching the New Years Celebration at Times Square I saw a Marine PFC in his dress uniform there. I was a little surprised why you would ever do such a thing.<div><br></div><div>There are functions that you can't wear your uniforms to such as political events or to an extremist organization. I will admit that I did get married in my blues. But is there a time and place for it. I recall seeing video from the WWII era where all soldiers would wear their uniforms while on pass. Now we don't do that but some will still wear their dress uniform to events. I often tease my wife that I am going to wear mine to my sisters wedding because I refuse pay to rent a used tux for two hundred dollars. But I will get the tux to keep the wife happy, at the loss of my wallet.</div><div><br></div><div>Where have you seen military members wear their uniforms to in public? The last question, how did it reflect on the military?</div><div><br></div><div>Just don't be like the Navy Seal that killed Bin Laden.</div><div><br></div><div>(I have heard that if you are going to military wedding and you out rank the groom or have more decorations than the groom you shouldn't wear the uniform as you don't want the groom to look any less compared to you.)</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div class="pta-link-card"><div class="pta-link-card-picture"><img src="http://t.fod4.com/c/8e464776e6/c480x270_custom_10436fc7852ae75711ac2de0a2594570_30678.jpg"></div><div class="pta-link-card-content"><div class="pta-link-card-title"><a target="_blank" href="http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/8e464776e6/the-navy-seal-who-killed-osama-bin-laden">The Navy Seal Who Killed Osama Bin Laden</a></div><div class="pta-link-card-description">with Rob Riggle, Funny Or Die</div></div><div style="clear:both"></div><div class="pta-box-hide"><i class="icon-remove"></i></div></div>

It wasn't a political event, it added to the security of the event, and provided contrast to people just out to drink and celebrate, which could give the impression to TV viewers worldwide that all Americans are rowdy. Servicemembers worldwide watch the show too, and I'll bet more than a few appreciated it. Diversity.

My issue with wearing dress uniform out for NYE (or for any "party" type holiday) is that there is a good likelihood that the individual is going to be drinking, probably in to excess, which can lead to unbecoming behavior while in uniform. To me, this is akin to going to a bar in uniform.

Sir,
As long as the uniform is worn properly and s/he is not bringing discredit to our Nation, branch of service, or the uniform... carry on. I would've worn my uniform to my own wedding, but it wasn't set up properly. I've worn my Class As to funerals, weddings, Veterans events. As a woman veteran, it's a nice way to honor your service instead of being overlooked as a supporter only. Plus, it's always a great ice-breaker.

Each service has specific guidance on when it is appropriate to wear which uniforms. There's really no gray area, just know your own regs and leave it at that.

I wore my Dress Greens to a photo studio in the mall for family pictures at Ft. Lewis and got all kinds of ugly looks. Most were from asshats in ACU's and what not. I am fine with you wearing them on certain occasions as long as you don't bring discredit upon the uniform. I also wore my Dress blues to my baby sisters wedding a few years ago and to make sure I didn't bring discredit because I was the only service member in attendance, I did not drink or do anything questionable.

When I was a young PFC, I was assigned to a color guard and got blues. Went on leave and flew back to see my folks in my blues, yeah for the chicks, but my Dad and Grandpa were vets and it made my Mom and Grandma all silly to take pictures when I got there.

When PCS'ng from Korea the airline lost my luggage I only had a set of BDU's to wear for two days. I see no problem with wearing a uniform to occasions as long as you are not endorsing something

I wore my Greens to my sister and my first wedding. Back in the day we wore greens on Pay day. We had inspections on class A's. We also was required to travel in them. I can remember going home from basic on a Greyhound from Ft. Benning to Ky. It sucked. But then it was reg.

I wore mine at my parent's 50th Anniversary. The other branches probably don't know this but our Navy dress blues (aka Cracker Jacks) bottom laced up and tie in the back. When I was bent over, somebody pulled the string. I didn't notice so when I was on the dance floor with my then girl friend dancing, the bottoms fell down. The band stopped in mid-song. The girl friend died laughing. I was in the middle of the floor showing everybody my briefs.

I believe its within regulation for an active duty person to wear a uniform anytime except for political and other events that would discredit the uniform. I don't see that the wearing it at Times Square in itself discredits that Marine as long as his behavior is appropriate. (ie not appearing drunk, slovenly or disorderly) Reserve not an orders and retired and in some cases, honorably discharged veterans can wear if the event or activity is military in nature (ie Veterans, Memorial Day, a military wedding, a military/veterans association.) That said, the service member should use discretion in terms of risk of being targeted by terrorists or other violence especially in light of incidents such as ISIS/ISIL targeting military members. I wouldn't recommend flying on a commercial plane in uniform. If there is any doubt whether the event would potential either embarrass the member or put him/her at risk, then don't wear it. However, I wouldn't stick my head in the sand either. I still wear my uniform with pride at military-related events.
