While watching the New Years Celebration at Times Square I saw a Marine PFC in his dress uniform there. I was a little surprised why you would ever do such a thing.<div><br></div><div>There are functions that you can't wear your uniforms to such as political events or to an extremist organization. I will admit that I did get married in my blues. But is there a time and place for it. I recall seeing video from the WWII era where all soldiers would wear their uniforms while on pass. Now we don't do that but some will still wear their dress uniform to events. I often tease my wife that I am going to wear mine to my sisters wedding because I refuse pay to rent a used tux for two hundred dollars. But I will get the tux to keep the wife happy, at the loss of my wallet.</div><div><br></div><div>Where have you seen military members wear their uniforms to in public? Did it seem professional and respectful for the occasion? The last question, how did it reflect on the military?</div><div><br></div><div>Just don't be like the Navy Seal that killed Bin Laden.</div><div><br></div><div>(I have heard that if you are going to military wedding and you out rank the groom or have more decorations than the groom you shouldn't wear the uniform as you don't want the groom to look any less compared to you.)</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div class="pta-link-card"><div class="pta-link-card-picture"><img src="http://t.fod4.com/c/8e464776e6/c480x270_custom_10436fc7852ae75711ac2de0a2594570_30678.jpg"></div><div class="pta-link-card-content"><div class="pta-link-card-title"><a target="_blank" href="http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/8e464776e6/the-navy-seal-who-killed-osama-bin-laden">The Navy Seal Who Killed Osama Bin Laden</a></div><div class="pta-link-card-description">with Rob Riggle, Funny Or Die</div></div><div style="clear:both"></div><div class="pta-box-hide"><i class="icon-remove"></i></div></div>

I personally do not wear my uniform. I have only done it once when I was a silly private.
I definitely do not agree with being authorized to wear the duty Uniform everywhere. People who do this are just looking for attention. I will have to agree with SFC Michael Hasbun that if any uniform is going to be worn around for travel and all it should be the Dress.
Now, you could always go to Jos A. Bank; they have a great selection of nice suits and even a formal one that I saw last year which I came really close to buying. I thought it would be great for Formals. Then you can own it and utilize the attire more often without the thought of renting.
I onnly wear my Uniform when it is required of me though.

I see people Christmas shopping and crap in their uniforms and it bugs the crap OUTTA me. I even seen someone in uniform for Black Friday! The work uniform is for work! Not to go out galavanting all over the place...

I think it is appropriate for official functions and appearance, but not so much for random touring or new years at Times Square. You also need to be careful at other peoples weddings, especially non military ones... as if you have a uniform, you could detract from the rest... I think in some instances... laying low is best.

True. I will be wearing my uniform to my sisters wedding next year. She asked to do so. I am sure I will attract a lot of attention but I don't think it will take away from the event. I know most of the people that will be there and they know I am in the military. Plus it saves me from renting a tux.

I went to a friends wedding when I was on active duty. We grew up together and he asked me to wear my dress blues. I told him I didn't want to be the best dressed man at his wedding and show him up. He told me to wear them anyways so I did. It actually took a lot of attention away from the wedding at first but it turned out good. I did leave with someone even though I up as alone. So I think weddings are fine. But now that I am out I am not sure if I can still wear them in public?

I am not share of the policy that covers those that have served. My sister just asked me to wear mine to her wedding. I am more than willing to do so. First, I don't have to rent a suit. I will save a bunch of money on that so I can buy alcohol. Next, I already have it set up and ready to go.

I have seen a few in my area wearing their uniforms a few days before our monthly drill while in the mall going to get a hair cut and other shopping. They must have seen me because they didnt stay longs and they know who i am even though I am in a different unit than them but I did make a few phone calls to notify their COC about it. Other than that happening on multiple times by the same people I wore my ASU to my little sisters wedding a few years ago i work offshore and didnt have time to go rent anything before and needed to pick it up from the sew shop anyway. Since then i have added dress clothing to my wardrobe so im not wearing my ASU to often.

As long as they are squared away and representing the military in a good light I see no problem with it. It could inspire others to join. Think about it...if a ciivilian sees a Marine with his dress uniform on and his stuff is tight, it could create a favorable impression of the armed services. It could be a good recruiting tool and gain respect for all branches. If he is all jacked up, then it makes us all look bad. It all depends on the individual responsibility of that soldier and how much they care about their uniform.

When I was in you were not allowed to be in public in your working uniform, the dungaree uniform that was very much the exact same thing people wore in prison at the time. We were supposed to travel in uniform, almost no one did, and had to be in uniform when checking in at a new command.
I was broke when I was in and that dress uniform saw a lot of functions, weddings, Funerals, Formal events, Dates, hanging out with friends when I was stationed close to home, visits to Grandmas. I even attended a Disney College Program Formal after I retired in Dress Blues.
When in public my uniform was always inspection correct at all times, and I always made sure whatever I was doing in uniform was allowed by regulation. To this day my dress Blues sit in my closet inspection ready. Unfortunately I weigh in at more than twice what I did when they were issued so it is unlikely they would fit.

The US Army is still way back in the proper use of the dress uniforms.Today almost all soldiers in the system are reluctant to use the Class B uniform and persits in using the combat or field uniform for all sort activities including the most formal ones. For me that's a disgrace and a very substandard attitude for the service, that has to change by regulation one's and for all.

IN 1963 I WAS ABOUT TO BE DRAFTED AND HAD NO DESIRES FOR BEING IN MIITARY!
LUCKILY I GOT INTO A NON COMBAT ARMY RESERVE OUTFIT!
IN BASIC DUE TO MY BALANCE AND COORDINATION ISSUES (I WAS- AM A KLUTZ)
I RECEIVED MUCH NCO HARRASMENT, WHICH DID NOTHING TO MAKE ME MORE A SUPER TROOPER!
I WAS MARRIED IN 1966 AND ONE NIGHT MY WIFE AND A NEIGHBOR LADY WENT TO THE MOVIES AND WATCHED THE BARRY SADLER MOVIE OF THE GREEN BERETS!
SHE IMMEDIATELY WENT GOO GOO OVER THE BERETS, AND WHEN I MENTIONED THERE WAS A GREEN BERET RESERVE OUTFIT IN OUR ARMORY BUILDING , SHE WANTED ME TO IMMEDIATELY TRANSFER OVER!
I REPLIED I HATED THE ARMY AND WANTED TO DO NOTHING WITH A COMBAT UNIT!
SHE WAS QUITE DISAPPOINTED WITH MY DECISION!
A WEEK LATER SHE WANTED TO DO A COMPROMISE BY HAVING ME WEAR MY DRESS GREENS UNIFORM WHEN GOING OUT
FOR MOVIES OR DINNER ON WEEKENDS!
OF COURSE THIS WAS OUT FOR ME AS WELL!
I WAS NOT GOING TO FEED HER STOLEN VALOR ISSUES!
IN FEBRUARY 1967 I GOT DIVORCED, OCTOBER 67, GOT A MEDICAL DISCHARGE!
MAY 16 1968 MY RESERVE UNIT WAS SENT TO NAM!
