First, why do you want to join? And asking for advice while lying about your employment (and name, I suspect) is not a good way to start. You are not Sponge Bob.

First find out if you are even qualified to enlist, before you get your hopes up. 80% of 18-24 year olds do not meet current enlistment standards.

80% of Military Recruitments Turned Down
The U.S. military has been turning down applicants in droves, and it's not just because of the drawdown.

Not sure how old you are, but if you are a youngin', decisions you make growing up can affect your eligibility when the time comes. Stay out of trouble, stay away from drugs, stay in shape and don't get fat, and graduate high school.

Choose an MOS that will directly transfer to the civilian sector. Do the minimum enlistment to qualify for education benefits and the GI Bill. Then take your training and get out. Things are getting worse by the week....

I would agree up the point you advise to get out. At that point you may have some arrows in your quiver and are in a position to consider everything at the time before you re-up for 6 more. Hopefully you will have made a success of your first enlistment and be able to objectively judge before going one way or the other.

I would tell them not to join at all. The military has become a joke and a full-on fraud for those who are mislead into thinking they will be protecting the rights of the citizens and the "freedom," we enjoy.

Unless he is dead set on the Army, have him check out careers in the forgotten service, the US Coast Guard. I was USN, USAR, then USCG and retired. Best twenty years of my career, bar none. A few constructive hours of solid investight ion of the USCG could potentially change his life. Well, that's my ten cents worth.

Make sure that you do not take "no" for an answer. If there is a job available to you that you REALLY want, make sure you get it.

If you are not qualified for the job or it is not open you will have to take NO for an answer.

That's why I added the availability part. I had jobs available that my recruiter told me that I didn't. MEPS flat out told me that the recruiter suckered me, but by the time I learned better, the paperwork was done and I was already sworn in. It was too late. And the first job that I tried for, I was told couldn't happen. But with my GT score, I am applicable for any job in the Army. The recruiter wanted to get his numbers. Hence my advice about not taking "no" for an answer, if the job he wants is available and he is eligible for it.

Start by telling the truth from the get go. Working at Krusty Krab.........not a good bell ringer to start the day off.

Krusty Crab was a real restaurant, but closed now. He needs to update his profile.
