I am applying for a position in Fort Shafter as a Tour of Duty, and it's open to Guardsmen. What are my chances of getting that position? It requires any engineer MOS (primarily 12B) and e4-e6 rank. Is there any reason I shouldn't apply? Any advice?

The one way to guarantee not being selected is to not apply.

Excellent point, sir. I'm definitely applying unless there's a dire reason not to.

Nope , do it !! why ask this question ? Do you want to do it ? Then apply!!! Do you want the experience and the knowledge that comes from it ? Then apply !! Are you scared about not getting it ? Too bad ! life isn't fair !!! Still apply !!
If you put your best foot forward and put together the absolute best packet you can, ask for guidance from your NCO !!! Still apply !! If you can't get the guidance from your NCO get another one to help !!

Your career is your career not anyone else's , I have seen so many Soldiers wonder this same question and I always told them apply !! The worst that can happen is they say no !

Now you just keep applying for other positions !!! Don't play the victim card and quit after the first denied application. Keep trying never quit !

Thank you, SFC. Very sound advice. The only reason I wouldn't apply is "We won't let you" or "You can't, we're deploying." Both of those chances are extraordinarily low.

If they say we won't let you go to your 1SG then to your CSM

A no is just another question, I have never accepted "no we won't let you"
Give me a quantifiable reason why and I will accept it if it is quantifiable.

And if they said we are deploying until you have orders you aren't deploying !

It's ultimately up to the brigade level command to make that decision. The brigade command is the level that needs to provide the Commander's Memo ultimately needed to release you from the unit. Be sure to utilize open door policies if you get stuck.

Always apply if you think you're qualified. The absolute worst thing that will happen is someone else will get selected. You should also make sure that your chain of command knows you are looking for opportunities, a) they need to know and will need to approve the tour if you get accepted and b) they may know of specific opportunities that would fit your experience and qualifications.
Also, full disclosure, I am a traditional Guardsman that applied for and was selected for a t10 position.
Good luck.

As long as your credentials are good or your good at interviewing you should get the job. Giving that somebody else with better credentials dont get it. I applied for over 100 jobs so dont get discouraged if you don't get it just keep applying for other jobs. I landed an ados job out here at NGB and im from ohio so they will pay for you to pcs. Best of luck in your journey.

You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not applying. I've been on a couple ados tours just by asking my chain of command if there was anything available, I've been lucky enough to turn my hard work on the last tour into a temp tech position that's been pretty good to me for the last year and half

This is something that you should inform your chain of command about. It is a courtesy that you should afford them. I used Tour of Duty to find my current position. I am on Title 10 ADOS. The Guard did pay to PCS me to my new duty station. However though I still drill with my home state. The policy varies from state to state. In addition to this your promotion still based of your home state. So if you want to stay in good standing you might want to still participate in your units drills. Tour of Duty is a great resource but it is extremely competitive. You can see how many people apply for a position. I went into a unique position where I didn't have much competition. I am not saying that you won't get the position but you might have to apply for a few positions until you get picked up. I have known some that it never worked out for but that shouldn't be a reason to stop applying.

Thank you, sir. And I am actually going to do the paperwork side by side with my readiness NCO, not on my own. This duty station is in Hawaii. Would I still be *required* to drill with my unit in PA? That seems fairly unreasonable.

now that's a good question?? Hawaii duty well you are going to have a hard time getting to drill. there are memorandums that allow you to perform duty with the unit in Hawaii

just try see what happens. your Commander , 1SG and Readiness NCO has to sign off on the packet.

don't get d8iscourged just do it!!

SPC (Join to see) - It is dependant on your state. Each state has policies. I have seen some that make them drill still and some that don't. In your case your state would have to realize that there is no way you could still drill. A lot of times soldiers will go on orders and then IST to their new state. That could be an option. But a lot of times they don't like to do that. It is really a case by case basis.

I'm on ADOS at National Guard Bureau and they paid to PCS me up to Virginia. The only way to potentially get approved is to apply. It can't hurt anything.

If you're out of state I can't imagine your chances would be that great. ADOS doesn't typically pay for a soldier to relocate as they are typically temporary positions that go fiscal year to fiscal year. I'd imagine a local guardsman has a better chance especially if there is still a requirement to drill and do AT with your actual unit.

I always found out about ADOS positions through my Retention NCO/Platoon Sergeant. Whenever a position is sent to him whether it's ADOS, AGR or Fed Tech he'd e-mail the info out. I'd recommend getting in touch with your own AGR NCO's to see if they have any info about open positions. He also assisted me with putting my packets together.

One thing that I believe helped me get considered and interviewed for positions is that I always included my resume and I also included a cover letter explaining why I was interested in the position and why I felt that I was a good fit.

BTW - are you talking about Fort Shafter in Hawaii? How are you going to interview? If by some chance you did get the position over a local Guardsman how will you get out there? Where will you live? That's a lot of money to spend for a temporary position.

Every ADOS position I've applied for has required a letter from my Commander essentially granting permission and stating that I would still drill and do AT with my unit. The info for the ADOS position should include a checklist of items needed to complete the packet and should state whether or not you will be required to drill with your unit.

SSG (Join to see) - You are right about the drills. I still drill with my state. I have to drive a good bit but that is something that I accepted going into it.

Also, T10 ADOS are not required to drill, not sure if the position you're applying for is T10 or T32. However, if you are still required to drill you could request to split drill with a unit near your duty station.

Also the title is a little off, it should say" what are my chances of being released from drill for an ADOS position on title 10 "

Or something to that effect
The way your question reads is you are on ADOS and they are trying to cut short your orders
That's what I thought when I first saw the post

God speed good luck

Always apply for everything. I received calls on positions I applied for through the Tour of Duty site.
Also ADOS jobs on the MOGUARD site. The least you will learn from applications are what may be missing from your personnel file (iPerms), how to interview, or get the job. That's how I have my current ADOS job. GL
