Less than 1% are currently serving in uniform. Only about 8% of Americans are Veterans. Not experiencing the impacts of war is both a gift and a curse. To avoid creating ignorance and furthering naivete, there are some good books to sustain some flickering knowledge. Here is a link for some of these to prime the discussion:

Very true! Personal commentary and appearances are the absolute best way and may make the most lasting effect. It's something we can all do especially with family and friends.

I would recommend Rescue Warriors: The US Coast Guard, America's forgotten Warriors

The Coast Guard is one our uniformed services which doesn't get enough credit or visibility. Folks have a highly favorable view of the CG because they can relate to its missions in their communities. The book is certainly worth a read.

Most of the books suggested are on battle tactics. two of my favorite are My helmet for a pillow by Robert Leckie, and With the old breed by Eugene Sledge. I know they are both by Marines, but great books about the Pacific Campaign.
