Hello all, I'm in the Army Reserves and my Unit is mobilizing to Ft. Hood TX for 12 months starting at the beginning of 2019. I have done a lot of research on the area and have spent about 6 months in the Ft. Hood area throughout my career, but always stayed on post. I know Killeen might not be the safest place to live but are there good neighborhoods within Killeen? Or is it better to stay in Copperas Cove and Harker Heights? I'm just looking to rent either an apartment or small condo and I would like the shortest commute possible. Any suggestions would be great.

Know where your work place is before you decide where to rent. If you don't know Killeen well it is better to stick to Harker Heights or Coperas Cove. Rent is a little higher in both places but the break in and burglary rates for Killeen are outrageous. Professional burglars live in this area. Almost nothing is ever recovered. Killeen PD has no burglary squad so burglars get a free pass unless caught red handed in the act. I live in Killeen and my house has burglar bars on all doors and windows plus alarm system and camera security system. While I was deployed to Korea for a year and my wife and kids stayed here we got broke into and cleaned out while my wife was at work. That was when I put all the security items on the house. I live in a very good neighborhood by Killeen standards, there are many very bad neighborhoods here and a few good ones. My next door neighbor is Killeen PD so good for our neighborhood.

Anything off of Rancier Ave. Its a straight shot to the East Gate. Just kidding-DO NOT do that.
I prefer Harker Heights, the commute itself is not bad, but you will hit some nasty traffic at the gate regardless.

In my opinion gated community’s are prolly the best to live at like my self cause it’s quite and only people with certain codes or cards can access the area and prosecutors and trespassers are taken off area ASAP and the areas are quite as well and Harker Heights in my opinion is better to be at

I lived in Kempner. It was nice being away from everyone, but still close enough to Ft Hood that my commute was fairly short.

Cove and Kempner are the best. However, if you want the shortest commute and affordable then I would try to rent on post since utilities are included they have some for E-6+ Geographical Bachelors https://www.forthoodfh.com/fort-hood-fort-hood/fort-hood-family-housing-family-housing/

I also just found this that’s more affordable than in town (I live out there too, not in that specific area though) more peace and quiet too.

You could easily split the rent with someone on this and have plenty money left. It’s not much further to post than coming from Cove but it doesn’t matter were you’re driving in from there is traffic and it costs gas.

Also, regardless of where you rent ; except for on post, you not only have security rent deposit at the beginning but you pay security deposit on utilities as well, add all that up and on post sounds so much better.

SFC Dagmar Riley - I actually did look at that one on apartments.com I wouldn't mind being a little further away from Hood in a place like that. Thanks so much!

Cove isn't too bad, Harker Heights is nicer. If there are nice parts of Killeen, I've never seen them.

I would look in Copperas Cove there are apartments on Main Street in Cove, and it’s a straight shot into hood through the tank destroyer gate on the west end of hood

Awesome. Thank you. I will take a look at Main Street in Cove. I’ve hear good things about Cove so far.
