Without a doubt, there are truly some great resources available to active and Reserve component personnel and veterans. Of course, if folks don't know that they're out there, members and their families couldn't possibly benefit from some of these amazing offers and services. So, the idea here is to share those helpful tidbits of information, tips, links, lessons learned, processes, resources, wisdom and/or POCs to help members find the resources they need for their troops, their families, and to help themselves. Just a couple of quick admin notes, please make sure to share the source if known, and remember to post in accordance with RallyPoint guidelines. Well, I'm certain that will be a great way to get timely information, resources, and assistance to those who need it most, when they need it the most... so, if you have something useful, helpful, or good-to-know, please feel free to share. Alright folks, it's that time, so pull-up a keyboard and let's get this thing started; thank you for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

*** Volunteer Opportunities ***
Sometimes idle time & idle minds can give way to more productive use and volunteering is a positive step in that direction. Here are some different opportunities that may help keep you busy and provide you with a new sense of purpose.

Over 140,000 volunteers gave more than 11 million hours in service to America's Veterans. It is impossible to calculate the amount of caring and sharing that these VAVS volunteers provide to Veteran patients. VAVS volunteers are a priceless asset to the Nation's Veterans and to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.
The American Red Cross, through its strong network of volunteers, donors and partners, is always there in times of need. We aspire to turn compassion into action so that...
...all people affected by disaster across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope;
...our communities are ready and prepared for disasters;
...everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood and blood products;
...all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed; and
...in an emergency, there are always trained individuals nearby, ready to use their Red Cross skills to save lives.

Volunteer opportunities with the USFWS may be found at more than 500 refuges and hatcheries throughout the United States. The best way to begin is to visit the Web site of a particular refuge or hatchery – and then visit the actual location.

Across the United States, more than 500,000 business leaders, community advocates, parents, teens and individuals who want to give back and support their neighbors volunteer at the Y. That’s because in 10,000 neighborhoods nationwide we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but deliver positive, personal and social change.

Our mission is to provide a virtual community center where servicemembers and veterans can connect with each other and with their local community.
Vision
Warrior Gateway is a virtual community center connecting servicemembers and veterans to each other, to their local communities and to a wealth of knowledge. As the first step in any transition, Warrior Gateway sets a solid foundation for a network of support, allowing members to pose questions to the community, engage with others, and make valuable local connections. Beyond just searching for military support or jobs, Warrior Gateway provides information and ideas from experts and community members based on their knowledge and experience.

Here is an organization that provides an all expense week in Alaska at their retreat for OIF/OEF/OND Veterans. I will be going there in the middle of August.

Operation Heal Our Patriots gives wounded veterans and their spouses the opportunity for spiritual refreshment, physical renewal, and marriage enrichment. Couples participate in Biblically-based seminars that help strengthen their relationships with God and others and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation with outdoor activities at our Alaskan wilderness lodge. We continue to support these men and women after their initial stay, keeping their spiritual needs and marriages a priority.

Also, Virginia offers Veteran ID cards, which can help those who are not retired prove our status as veterans for retail discounts. It also automatically registers veterans with the commonwealth's Department of Veterans Services for benefits assistance.
