CPT David Gowel There are many top notch schools that offer free courses, search online for what schools can give you the courses you want, I would suggest budgeting your time.

I would suggest a AAS in the field you want to get into and remember to add your time in class as experience since you are physically doing the projects. I'm not sure about the officer side of the house or if you can receive the GI Bill like those of us that were enlisted but if you can becoming a VA Workstudy could also be an option while going to college to get the networking and experience in. For example I had a student that was getting a Networking and Administration degree and at the same time was doing workstudy at the VA Medical Center in the IT department. He now works at the VA Medical Center here.

ITT Technical Institute is probably your best bet.

No ITT is not a 'best bet' - it's a for profit school with limited upside and every single candidate I have interviewed coming out of ITT is woefully under qualified. Don't waste your money on that school.

Just wanted to respond to the original question on tech jobs. I have nothing to do with Spartan University, but they launched the only distance learning FAA approved Airframe and Powerplants certification program that you will also get a A.S Degree if you want within a 18 month time frame. Part of their accreditation is job placement for graduating student is at 90%. If you didn't know, working on drones and Electric Power windmiills you will need an A&P Certification. Just my two cents.

Just a short response to the question, I have nothing to do with Spartan University, but they came out with a on-line distance learning Airframe & Powerplant course that is the only FAA approved for distance learning, where you can get your certification, and also your A.S. Degree, within 18 months, whether your active or retired VA, GI Bill, part of their accreditation is job placement which is close to 90% of graduating students. Seams like another way to get tech training, from my perspective

Cpl David E. Jenkins Jr. - It is constantly evolving - particularly as skills required by industry changes. Increasingly a lot of what used to be entry level IT jobs - help desk, server admin, etc are being automated. For example in a virtualized server environment there is less need to server administrators since most of the typical server admin tasks, particularly in provisioning, etc can be done automatically. Similarly as we see an evolution toward Software Defined Networking and in particular Software Defined Data Centers, many of the tasks done by low level network engineers and network admins because automated. vSAN technology is going to have an impact on storage engineers. It's not necessarily that 'less' people will be needed, but an ever evolving set of skills.

Cpl David E. Jenkins Jr. - You're correct. Times are definitely changing. PC sales are on the decline and mobile is definitely in. Cloud services are BOOMING right now as it has become cheaper to pay for a service rather than the salary and taxes/benefits of someone to do the actual work.

Contacting defense contractors is always a solid idea. Companies like Raytheon hire veterans who are experts in their respective military jobs to do jobs that are similar on the civilian side. Any company that's into weapons manufacturing for the military is usually a good route. What's more is that they'll actually look at how you performed in the military with an educated frame of reference from other veterans to give you a leg up over your civilian counterparts. cool stuff.

You might want to look into GIS. They have a lot of free, on-line seminars and it's becoming a a must-have for anyone interested in first-responder/emergency management http://www.esri.com/what-is-gis

I do - thanks. I'm trying to make a comprehensive list of companies that provide these types of programs to help some friends living throughout the US. Some programs that I know of are provided by Salesforce, Microsoft, and SAP NS2 but success stories from these or others would be appreciated.

CPT David Gowel - Is your intent to build this list on RallyPoint? I think it would be a great value add for the community- sort of a "one stop shopping." My suggestion would be to post your intention/mission on both RP and LinkedIn, especially the Vet related groups.

Good thinking. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm starting with RallyPoint as it's helpful to let these guys know more details about the military background of the vets who went through the training and liked it / got a good job out of it. I've heard about programs that can sound good on paper but turn out to be less useful than hoped. I don't want to steer anyone towards those.
