What are the best traits in an authentic leader?

I believe from my experience and training in the military made me an authentic man in my life. I learn responsibility, I learned honesty, I learn how to be strong and never give up. I have a saying that I used in my work ethic, (if I can’t fix it, it ain’t broke!)

What are the best traits of an authentic leader?
1) In order to command others you have to be able to follow orders yourself.
2) In order to command others you should know what each and every position covered under your umbrella you should have working knowledge of. This would allow you to assist other individuals in the correct way to perform the task.
3) You have to be detail oriented so that the task is performed right the first time to eliminate extra cost.
4) Demonstrate a modicum of respect and understanding for those who are performing the tasks for you. People tend to respond and perform better when they feel that they are appreciated.

Considerateness. The more a leader considers, the more authentic they are. This trait more than any other will endear them to those that they lead as well as follow. It will inspire all other great traits like for example: integrity and confidence, because they will see the full picture and know what is right. It will motivate that leader to be better as they have to consider things that don't effect them but does effect those they serve.

As a MSGT in the Air Force I have learned and followed these 10 steps as the shop lead and supervisor. This is what I think an authentic leader should possess as well as a range of traits that help them connect with their team, build trust, and inspire them to achieve great things.

• Self-awareness: Authentic leaders are aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
• Transparency: They are open and honest with their team members.
• Empathy: Authentic leaders are able to put themselves in their team's shoes and understand their needs and concerns.
• Integrity: They have a strong moral compass and always do what is right.
• Humility: They don't let their position or status go to their head and are willing to admit their mistakes and learn from them.
• Vision: They have a clear and compelling vision for the future and are able to inspire and motivate their team to work towards it.
• Courage: They are willing to take risks and make difficult decisions, even in the face of opposition or adversity.
• Accountability: Authentic leaders hold themselves accountable for their actions and decisions.
• Authenticity: They are genuine and true to themselves, and they don't try to be someone they're not.
• Listening skills: They actively listen to their team members' feedback and ideas and use this information to improve their leadership and decision-making.

The ability to inspire trust and confidence as a leader. Also have a clear understanding of the tasks you demand from your subordinates and the ability to guide them in those tasks.

Leadership is mentorship! Great qualities of a leader include:
- Shipmates before self
- Act & Respond as if someone is always watching because they are
- Listen with your whole being
- Get to know your people, their family’s names & their Hobbies/interests
- Always tell our shipmates how much you appreciate them no matter what!!

What makes a great leader? Someone who can lead from the rear, someone who can be a sponge and absorb different criticism and challenges that come their way. A good leader can also learn how to follow.

I believe there are several necessary traits that make a great leader. An authentic leader must:
1. Have a vision.
2. Set clear goals for his or her team(s).
3. Be able to receive constructive criticism, as well as give it.
4. Be consistent in his or her demeanor with is subordinates.
5. Communicate transparently with his or her subordinates.
6. Lead by example.

Get the job done

I would say being honest with your people. And that sometimes means that leaders can’t be friends with their people but instead need be their leader.
