SGM Matthew Quick I agree; although, reclass is only possible, if it is in the best interest of the Service. I hope you agree SGM.

There is no best way. There is an only way which would be that you need to max everything.

My points for 45e (abrams turret mechanic) were at 798 for nearly 2 years before I got out and for my entire time as an E4, messed up knee and back couldn't re-up or re-class.

SGM Steve Wettstein; does max everything include a must in deployment or can promotion be achieved without it?

Well said. However, is deployment a must for promotions these days?

CPT Gurinder (Gene) Rana - I'm pretty sure that they took out deployment points, but don't quote me on that.

The best way to get promoted to E-5 (or any grade for that matter) is to be the BEST E-4 you can be and not worry about it. It will happen when He's ready for it - which might be a different time scale than what you want. :-)

Hi PO2 (Join to see)
With at least 200 billion galaxies out there (and possibly even more), we're very likely talking about a Universe filled with around 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in our observable Universe.
So do I still think that my God is interested in the details of my life? Yes - He *IS* that big. :-)

CMSgt Mark Schubert; I totally agree with your advice and would like to add that in most such cases promotion comes rather quick, even ahead of peers at times.

SGM Matthew Quick kindly advice as to why deployment is required under Army Centralized Promotion Management; is deployment used as a discriminator by boards?

What are the best ways to get promoted to E-5, even though your promotion points are at 798 and you have not been deployed?

Well, to start this off, you're looking to get promoted at Sergeant not E-5 as we all know that is just pay grade with lots of responsibilities. Unfortunately you're in a MOS that requires high promotion points and the best way to maximized your points is to start early. College for as example as soon as your available at your one year mark, score high in your APFT, shoot for expert (don't get off that range until you shoot a 36 or higher), volunteer (Red Cross) with proper documents so that your eligible to get a volunteer award. Max out on correspondence courses and go to any school your unit is willing to send you too whether you think it's stupid or not. This was my mentally if I could spend time in the weekend to hangout I could double that time and place it into things that will help me become a better Soldier for tomorrow. Good luck!

They are changing the point system again on 1 oct 15 to no longer include deployments. The points have been shuffled to include more cc's, resident courses and etc.

Good luck with that volunteer ribbon. I volunteered with my local fire dept/EMS, coached for sons baseball/ basketball teams(volunteer), helped out with charity runs and I still don't have mine. Guess bad leadership!

I guess my first question is: Have you been to the board? That's as much as 200 points right there, then WLC adds points. Also correspondence courses & college courses. If you haven't been to the board, I would start asking your CoC what it will take for you to get there. Without that (p) behind your rank, all the points in the world can't help you much.

Army boards are no longer worth points. They are go and no go.

It's been at least 5 years, maybe longer. There is a much bigger emphasis on weapons and PT now. It seems to me the promotion to E5 and E6 is based on how bad branch needs people at that rank. If they don't need people and points stay higher than reasonable, then you won't make it, Period.

Back in the Day the fastest way to get promoted to E-5 was to start off as an E-6...lol

Go to every school they offer in the unit. I knew an African American E-3 who got promoted very shortly to E-5 because he went to Airborne School (Civil Affairs Airborne Unit) and other schools that I can't remember. This was a USAR unit. He was only working part-time or was unemployed so the unit had funds and he took advantage of it. Doing well on the APFT 290 or above, helps you in the order of merit list. If you meet height and weight even better. I feel there is going to be a conflict soon (since we are so wimpy since 2010) so I forsee funding(we now see more training in the pacific to be prepared against China and N. Korea ) and such since our peace dividend and cutting back will go away and contingency money will be available for your training and it all works into the promotion scheme of things. If you can take advantage of your college courses in the 25th ID you will eventually get your degree and that helps too. Find out if your MOS is overstrength too and reclass to another MOS if necessary. I would try to go officer someday. If not on the active duty, on the reserve side. Max age is 32 1/2 in the USAR and just before 35th B-DAY in the National Guard. I became a 2LT when I was almost 34!

Best way to be all you can be is just that. Max PT score, get involved with the mission at hand. Get to any and every school you can, and I'm not talking hooah schools like air borne or air assault. Leadership schools like wlc, ssd1-2, alc. Talk to your chain of command and tell them you want multiple MOSs. Get involved with learning jobs that have nothing to do with you. When things need to get done... It's your time to shine.. Yea you'll look like your trying to earn a promotion. *cough* but without the ability to write your own awards... Your gunna have to go out your way to earn them.

i tend to agree with CMSgt Schubert, (and not to sound like a commercial) be the best you can be. Superiors and supervisors alike will see the good work. Also, let's face it, unless we find another conflict, deployments are pretty much over.

I'm all about being/doing your best, but to be truthful, all that gets you these days is more work on your plate and the same PCS/deployment award as everyone else in your rank. My last deployment, We Medics had a rough tour. We all earned our CMB's, but were denied them and given CAB's since we were in a sustainment brigade(which is against latest ALARACT Message), also we had some medics go way beyond being a medic and did some heroic stuff. They were put in for higher awards(BSM w/ valor) and denied because "they were just doing their job". Yet our NCOIC who never once treated a single patient got a bronze star for running the aid station. This day and age in the Army at least is what you do, but more of who you are friends with.

Not trying to be negative here, just keeping it real.
