What are the pros and cons of Reserve AGR (not NG)? I've done research and have heard good and bad.

As a reserve AGR you have to be willing to work independently and sometimes in different skill sets...for example, your units HR NCO is PCSing and the unit doesn't get a replacement for months or even up to a year, someone has to cover down because they were the only full time HR. You don't necessarily have to know everything, but you need to know where to look and not afraid to ask questions. On the other hand, I love the responsibility, I have been active duty, Reserve TPU and Reserve AGR. As with everything you have to take the good with the bad.

The 1st tour is 3 years and you can put in to get off the program after that.....after the initial 3 years you can get out on your ETS date just like Active Duty.....I do know an AGR Soldier that was able to get off tour early, I know it took time, but he was able to do it......I hope this helps.

Ensure that you complete your NCOES and insist that you get what you want and need. Yes, you are 'on your own' but there is nothing wrong with seeking help from other unit members both Officer and NCO. You ALL work together as a team to ensure that the team is READY always.

It is different, AGR work must of the time by them self, (No help), You will have to help to the other personal (others AGR in your Unit, Maintenance, Supply, Administration...) it is a lot more responsibility. But in the end it is good experiences.

I know the basics like those sorts of things but I am hearing different thinks like you can leave the program whenever you want like a regular civilian job but then I hear that it's at the commanders discretion. Then I hear a difference in the pay and things of that nature. I am even getting this from current AGR soldiers. I just want to know what to expect for my family.

To go AGR is a contract, like going Active, the pay is all the same. the Benefits is all the Same. A E-5 get pay like a E-5...??? the main differences is that you are not close to a mayor base, and you work must of the time in small groups and have to work on weekend (1 a Month) and usually depending of your command you get later a 4 day pass. o and i don't think they have many jobs for Chaplain assistance's. Must of the time is Supply, Training Room, Administration, Mechanics.

Yea, it took me 3 years to get in the program as a CA but I finally made it. The slots are very very limited for us. I am actually going to be on FT Dix so that will be nice.

SGT Lewis,
The pros is that you are on Active Duty w/ all the entitlements associated w/ that. The cons were mentioned in some of the posts- you won't have a big staff to draw upon therefore you may have to cover down on a lot of duties. I'm AGR Reserves, and I have no regrets.
