As a reserve AGR you have to be willing to work independently and sometimes in different skill sets...for example, your units HR NCO is PCSing and the unit doesn't get a replacement for months or even up to a year, someone has to cover down because they were the only full time HR. You don't necessarily have to know everything, but you need to know where to look and not afraid to ask questions. On the other hand, I love the responsibility, I have been active duty, Reserve TPU and Reserve AGR. As with everything you have to take the good with the bad.

The 1st tour is 3 years and you can put in to get off the program after that.....after the initial 3 years you can get out on your ETS date just like Active Duty.....I do know an AGR Soldier that was able to get off tour early, I know it took time, but he was able to do it......I hope this helps.

Ensure that you complete your NCOES and insist that you get what you want and need. Yes, you are 'on your own' but there is nothing wrong with seeking help from other unit members both Officer and NCO. You ALL work together as a team to ensure that the team is READY always.

It is different, AGR work must of the time by them self, (No help), You will have to help to the other personal (others AGR in your Unit, Maintenance, Supply, Administration...) it is a lot more responsibility. But in the end it is good experiences.

I know the basics like those sorts of things but I am hearing different thinks like you can leave the program whenever you want like a regular civilian job but then I hear that it's at the commanders discretion. Then I hear a difference in the pay and things of that nature. I am even getting this from current AGR soldiers. I just want to know what to expect for my family.

To go AGR is a contract, like going Active, the pay is all the same. the Benefits is all the Same. A E-5 get pay like a E-5...??? the main differences is that you are not close to a mayor base, and you work must of the time in small groups and have to work on weekend (1 a Month) and usually depending of your command you get later a 4 day pass. o and i don't think they have many jobs for Chaplain assistance's. Must of the time is Supply, Training Room, Administration, Mechanics.

Yea, it took me 3 years to get in the program as a CA but I finally made it. The slots are very very limited for us. I am actually going to be on FT Dix so that will be nice.

SGT Lewis,
The pros is that you are on Active Duty w/ all the entitlements associated w/ that. The cons were mentioned in some of the posts- you won't have a big staff to draw upon therefore you may have to cover down on a lot of duties. I'm AGR Reserves, and I have no regrets.

What are the pros and cons of Reserve AGR (not NG)? I've done research and have heard good and bad.

It's a nice easy job, you likely won't be near military installations, It's difficult to get into the program, the job requires high self performing work ethics and discipline.

Sir, I was contacted by the hiring official stating that I am one of 5 being placed into the program. I had to get my updated blood draw and now I have to wait for my official call and email. So, I am waiting. I was told either end of last month or beginning of this month I will receive it. I am more so trying to prepare myself in what to expect from the program on both the positive and negative side. I know very well how competitive it is too. It took me almost 3 years of applying to get this. Weight lifted but I still want to know what to expect. My first duty station is Ft Dix. So, I'll be on the installation for this one.

Congratulations,
Expect some non-performers, the workload is hot and heavy then non existent, which is where the self motivation comes in. Do your best to provide the TPU leadership with all the tools and information they need rather than insist that they do it all or you control the show. An AGR should be about empowering the TPUs.

Thank you Sir. I have talked to other AGR soldiers but never Chaplain's Assistant so that's the only thing that makes me nervous. I know how my job works on the AD and in the reserves but not in this setting. I don't mind working and providing though. We shall see.

I have had to balance multiple positions at once due to personnel shortages. Not all slots are filled so you pull extra duty until it is, if ever, filled.

I recommend you broaden this question and tag Army Reserve to get a wider range of responses from those who have been accepted into and rejected from the AGR program SFC (Join to see)

By this being my first AGR tour, the pros is being considered active and receiving the same benefits as an active soldier. Also, there's room for growth and being full-time at the reserve will help you better understand the units mission. The cons are what mostly everyone said: limited personnel. Also, you'll most likely have to move to another state on your initial tour and at any other time. Lastly, if you prefer not to be present at a promotion board, this will be something to get use to.

Oh ok. So, one the 3 years are over, say you want to go back to TPU, would you have to finish out what you had on your original USAR contract or do you have to start a new one all together or do you just ETS from AGR?

Honestly, I'm not sure about that one and haven't thought about ETSing right now. If you need the answer, I'll ask my Retention NCO and Career Counselor.

I just got in contact with an actual AGR recruiter and he has been good at answering a lot of my questions. So, just for you if and when you decide to make that decision, he says that you ETS from the program and choose what you want to do from there.
