I’m going to be doing 92G (culinary specialist/ food service) for the U.S army and wanted to hear some different opinions on the MOS. Especially if you also had or have this MOS i would definitely love to hear what you feel about it.

You and your team mates have IMMENSE impact on soldier morale, good and bad. Lots of shift work. It really depends on what you want to do. There are competitions (I've led a Connelly Award team, field feeding category, won FORSCOM level) where if you win at Army level you could get a scholarship to Johnson and Wales. Some of the most impressive food and decorating displays I have ever seen, including in house ice sculptures border on the five star professional, especially at a thanks giving. As a more senior 92G, you are managing dining facilities, forecasting supplies, managing menus, creative rearrangement of standard rations to create variety, and making decisions on workload to support multiple missions. I've met good and I've met bad, but the good ones, were the Best. SFC Lloyd, SFC Jim Denett, MSG Ricky Morris are just a few of the greats.

MAJ Ken L. - there's only so much love you can put into the food, at lease at the DFAC. You have to follow recipe cards to the T, no more no less. If we got caught adding anything it would be a bad day for us. Now when I was in Afghanistan, we threw that out the window. I made my own seasonings and sauces. we cooked off of an MKT for about 90 soldiers. We were on a tiny FOB on the side of a mountain. We found out later people on the other COPs and other FOBs would volunteer to visit for various missions because they heard about our food. It was a great feeling!

I give them credit; it's an important, but unsung task. They work crazy hours sometimes, and out in the field, I have to believe it's hotter than hell in their mobile kitchens, but if "an army moves on it's stomach", then it's the cooks you can thank for that.

Cons: shift work, working in the kitchen all the time (kitchens all look the same), carpal tunnel, smelling like onions
Pros: shift work, advanced culinary opportunities, lots of room for promotion, generals aide, can work at any location and organization, your time in the field is pretty clean and well fed, offers a pathway into logistics
Basically, it's a fairly normal job, and it offers lots of good opportunities if you want to work a bit harder than your peers to stand out. The shift work can make it hard to stay in shape, but the steady schedule can also make it easier to plan for completing college courses.

From what I’ve heard the hours can be crazy, but if your interest is cooking, then the hours would be crazy anywhere.... personally I think it is a great job seeing as how I love cooking

(Join to see), been a 92G is a more important job than most folks believe. I loved my 92Gs and defended them with sword and cape. However, if you don’t like preparing meals for a few, then doing it for a few hundreds won’t get any better.
A word of advice, if you don’t mind. Get your ASVAB scores - to include your line scores - and check what other MOSs you qualify as well; see the bottom link. Do your reasearch, seek for information, and make an educated decision. Don’t rush on it and don’t feel pressure by the recruiter; I know.... I commanded a recruiting company way back then.

(Join to see) I left being a cook because I enjoyed it. I went to AIT to become a cook and afterwards traveled around cooking in various places. One of my old buddies still travels cooking for famous people and on yachts as a personal chef. For me, I hit burnout after a while. But I would have never figured out my next step without being a cook for all those years, and I learned a hell of a lot about cooking by opening my eyes and ears to my seniors.

MAJ Javier Rivera I actually already signed the contract for it :/ . MEPS only gave me the choice of infantrymen and cook, my highest scores were in clerical and they said no jobs would be available until june 2020! I have so much going on in my civilian life that I decided it would just be the best option to take it. Also my recruiter did pressure me ALOT lol. However he made a few good points that someone else has recently said, such as it will be an easier MOS to do while taking college classes. I mean it’s not that i hate cooking, i just never really do it so I'm unsure how things will turn out with me being a cook 24/7. Im just going to try to be open minded and do the best i can and hopefully it will be a great experience and work out for me!! Its only a four year contract and then i’m going to switch into something that I actually want to do in the military life as well as civilian life. Thank you so much for your help!!!

Now, just some information the recruiter will hate you to know, you are not committed until you ship out of your contract is for active duty. The way it works is that your first contract is to reserve your MOS, then on the day you report, you do sign a new contract (DD Form 4) and re-take your Oath of Enlistment. Then you are committed.

PS: I cooked in the Marines and National Guard... Marines was open or no mos contract.. 2 years.. NG.. injured 19D.. I only met 3 SM who actually signed up for the MOS... many flunked out of technology schools....

It's cook... not the BS name of culinary specialist. It can be easy or it can be real hard... anyway the Military is moving toward..pre made and using contractors such as Goodwill. I have done this MOS from time to time..they used to make people do this type of work for punishment...KP... Go visit a mess hall and see for your self...

I'm not a cook, do this is just what I've seen. If you just sit and do the basics, you'll likely hate it and get sick of just boiling food and having the other Soldiers complain. If you embrace it, you can be a very respected person - i.e. field chow go above and beyond and you will cheer up and entire company. Many 92Gs dont realize the potential and different assignments like advanced schools and high level staff support.
Also, they can be tasked out for guard duty as sometimes food service is contracted to civilians and third country nationals.
I had a former soux chef in my office a few months ago who hated being a 92G because he wasnt cooking, he was boiling already prepared stuff.

Seriously though. It’s a good start for culinary arts, kitchen management and other jobs where health and sanitation are essential. It’s a tough MOS as far as garrison is concerned. Long hours and shifts compared to rest of us.
As an outsider looking in, it looks layer back in the field while the rest of us are conducting battle drills.
I’ve also seen cooks do a lot of guard and other details during deployments.

Is 11b infantry or something? Lol that’s actually the only other choice they gave me. Either be a cook or be a infantrymen, thats all the service really needs right now i guess. Cooks and combat soldiers. I don't like cooking much but i rather that then 11b like you said lol! Im going to try to make the best out of it.

Like I said you will leave the service with options right away instead of having to learn a new trade. If you aren’t planning on staying in, cook may be a better option. If you have any aspirations of being a chef or running a restaurant this is a good way to start.

I want to do the retirement after 20 years. Im 18 now so i’ll be pretty young after retirement which is a good deal. After my initial contract is over though i will try to reclassify into supply 92Y. I was waiting for a job slot to open for 6 months for it and still had no luck so i just took the cook offer. Alot of people are saying it’s a good job to have under your belt once you return to a civilian, unfortunately i have no dreams of being a chef or restaurant owner. But i am there to serve my country so no matter the job i’m going to suck it up and serve the best way possible. I cried after taking it but at least i’ll finally learn how to cook lol

I was 92G in the Army and the equivalent in the USAF. Do your job ,study hard, learn your craft. The job is what you make it. I have always LIVED TO COOK AND LOVED TO COOK!!! PASSION FOR THIS JOB IS KEY!!! I was BLESSED to be in places where we could be CREATIVE while staying within REGULATIONS. Always have the menu cards on the workstation but allowed to adjust as needed!!!! BLESSINGS

onething good you dont have to worry about being hungry !! aside that serving troops that alone brought joy also not having any guard duty or barracks duty !!!
but you still have to qualify for PT and common tasks !!! its part of any line of work !!! as soldier respects earned !!! when i enlised i wanted to go into communications but wasnt lucky enough to scoring that high !!
i asks reception " what job do others not like but anyone can do ?? " he smiled " well cook !!!! seems alot dont think it takes much but try it !!!!!"
well then 94b which was changed !!!! i look back glad i was a cook long hours but worth it !!!! we made time to having fun and did PT after working mornings !! yes old days so much work and fun but you make your own time advance on cooking is fun with those whom put more into it

Merry Christmas!!! I love your energy lol the first person to wish me A happy Holidays. Funny you mentioned not being hungry i love eating lol but being around that food I definitely wont be skinny anymore after a year of this MOS. After hearing more pros than cons this job is starting to grow on me.

hey no problem you can have my serving hehehehe if its your first tour by chance you can go to GERMANY take it there use to be reps who would help you find a home or unit !!! whats good you put an effort showing respect they wont steer you wrong !!!! since i havent been there 7th corp was deactivated so that wont help you !!!!
if you can ask for ROBISON BARRACKS !!! its in STUTGARRT ok i spelled it wrong i know but its been 35yrs since i was there i dont know if you have an option to picking or finished with AIT keep in mind where ever you wind up cooks are always in need once you graduate try being a diet tech !!!!! that way you can work in hospitals !!!!
i wish i had known that myself but we live and learn
on side note military will be biggest family you'll have !!!! and you'll never forget those who you served with thats good part keep accountable for servings if your single CQ can be your best friend !!!! well for me it was !!!! i'd bring keys back at night i might head out with gang play bingo well i'd be back later he or she asks " whats chances anythings left over ? " yep you get it !! i'd either fix a plate or knew what i could fix without messing up kitchen !!!!
respects earned but taking care no matter whos around in unit everyone needs help !!! gawd l!!!! old days you couldnt go wrong !!!!! best of times and struggles we pulled through it and through everything you'll never forget anyone whom you served with !!! some special others well brothers and sisters in arms helping those who help others that was 39 yrs back though
in closing enjoy life take time to learning but listen to others which you'll learn more than anything !!!! most of all enjoy lifes little pleasures it brings you pick each other up when they are down or need a friend wether state side or overseas everyone cares you might not see it but in long run you will
