As shooting incidents seem to become more frequent what have you prepared yourself and your family to do should you ever be involved with an 'active shooter' in a public place? I have a friend (single mom veteran) who will be transferring to an online college program rather than risk dealing with a loner-loser who might 'go off' in a classroom? Suggestions on how best to prepare? Google 'bulletproof blankets' which are available for students.

You sure don't want to do what the government tells people to do. I watched a video put out by FEMA (I think) that tells you to hide under a desk and it that fails throw books or something at him.

"Take Action
As an absolute last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter:
Act as aggressively as possible against him/her.
Throw items and improvise weapons.
Yell.
Commit to your actions."

Unarmed: comply and try to transition yourself toward a position of cover . if someone can distract or lure them toward their goal point maybe another person could get away to get help or position their self to overwhelm or surprise the bad person. If it's a less than deadly confrontation- fight to get away when outnumbered or the other person ambushes you.

Die. I live in the Ideocracy of California where citizens aren't allowed to defend themselves.

Bummer. I grew up in NorCal and exited LE just as the Asian gangs were migrating to Stockton in the mid-80's and Highway 99 was the pipeline for Mexican black tar heroin. I am so glad I no longer live in that state!

I''ll not be out and about without a weapon. I refuse to go to a Gun free zone unless I have no choice. I would much rather have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it.

As Commander of our local American Legion (in a very small village) I have a mail box in City Hall. The Police Chief asked why I didn't stop in more than once every two weeks or so. I told him I didn't like leaving my gun in the car just to check my mail. ANd if it got overloaded The secretary would call me anyway. He told me that he would not be enforcing any law that stopped me from carrying in City Hall.... But I still have to leave it at home when I visit the school...We do a lot of activities with the HS....

CPO Andy Carrillo, MS I think my training and experience would help as adrenaline pumped me up to either do what was necessary or else to distract the perpetrator(s).

I think most of us would have done the same thing. We don't want to see non combatants take a hit, especially when someone is armed and everyone else is pretty much defenseless. What Chris did was awesome, and honestly I hope he's awarded some medal as a -now- Civilian and Veteran

I have carried concealed for 46 years. My reason for doing so is to protect those who are unable to protect themselves. My plan is simple, Kill the shooters by whatever means necessary.

Escape and Evade if possible .....otherwise hunker down and wait for rescue. Am assuming of course like every good law abiding citizen I did not take my weapon into church with me.

I'd have to evaluate the situation as it presents itself. If in a room without a shooter -- lock the door, call 911 and report, stack any items against it, turn off the lights and lay flat against the wall closest to the hallway door you just locked. If in the room with the shooter, throw whatever you can to distract, deflect and move forward. This is a hard question because it's too fluid a situation for anybody to say with certainty what they would or wouldn't do. I've had a fair bit of training and I can't say.

Well I have thought about it. But MOST place that are places of employment do not allow their personnel to carry while at work. Most Colleges don't allow it's students to carry either. So I really couldn't say. Hopefully my training would kick in and I do what ever happens. If I was carrying it would be a different scenario all together.
