May is a month which is chock full of reminders about military service for those serving, those supporting the people who are serving and those who died while in the service of this nation.
We are living in turbulent times yet I believe we have much to be thankful for. I am thankful:
1. that our armed forces are still attracting highly qualified, conscientious, and motivated soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.
2. that this nation is still generally the land of the free and more certainly the home of the brave.
3. for the privilege of serving this nation for so many years and getting to work with and know so many of those who served with me.
4. for the love of my wife and sons.
5. for my daily and eternal salvation through my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Mixed bag of emotions. Thankful that I didn't have to end someone's life. My deployment kept me stateside. Returned home to divorce papers. So I volunteered to deploy with 2nd battalion (they wouldn't allow me to) Retired from army so as not to take away from visitation with my son. (She alienated me from him anyway.) then 1st battalion deployed again. This time, they did go to Iraq. My driver was wounded, my friend lost his life, and another received head injury and will never live a normal life. I don't know what I think about it all.

SSG Paul Setterholm, I am sorry to learn that you returned to find divorce papers; but, glad that you were able to develop your relationship with your son. It is always hard to learn that soldiers you worked with were killed and you were not there - definitely agree that brings a mixed bag of strong emotions.
